Municipal solid waste management via mathematical modeling: A case study in İstanbul, Turkey
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2019)The prominence of managing municipal solid waste (MSW) in an efficient and effective manner is increasing from day to day. In this paper, the solid waste management (SWM) system of İstanbul is analyzed by applying the techniques from mathematical programming methodology. In this manner, the solutions of the two optimization problems which aim to minimize the total cost and the environmental effects of SWM, respectively, are presented in this study. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis is performed ...

Ontology-based data acquisition model development for agricultural open data platforms and implementation of OWL2MVC tool
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2020)In the open data world, it is difficult to collect data in compliance with a certain data model that is of interest to different types of stakeholders within a domain like agriculture. Ontologies that provide broad vocabularies and metadata with respect to a given domain can be used to create various data models. We consider that while creating data acquisition forms to gather data related to an agricultural product, which is hazelnut in this study, from stakeholders of the relevant domain, the ...

Oxygen diffusion into polystyrene-bentonite films
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2009)A simple fluorescence technique is proposed for the measurement of the diffusion coefficient of oxygen into polystyrene-clay composite films. The composite films were prepared from the mixture of surfactant-free pyrene (P)-labeled polystyrene latexes (PS) and modified bentonite (MNaLB) at various compositions at room temperature. These films were annealed at 200 degrees C above the glass transition (T-g) temperature of polystyrene for 10 min. Oxygen diffusion into the films was monitored with ...

Perception, petroleum, and power: Mythmaking in oil-scarce Turkey and Jordan
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2020)Oil has been a cardinal driver of economic growth and national development in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. States that produce oil in globally exportable quantities tend to be more powerful than those that do not. Oil-scarce states in the Middle East that neighbor oil-rich states and rely on them for imports create myths to explain their relatively unfortunate geology. This study illustrates and analyzes the myths that people in Turkey and Jordan have created to explain why they lack ...

Political turmoil and the impact of foreign orders on equity prices
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2020)This paper examines whether foreign investors possess an information advantage over local investors in the Turkish stock market between 2007 and 2015. We find that foreign investors have an information advantage in 24 stocks, corresponding to seven percent of the sample firms. Foreign investors' information advantage tends to prevail primarily during a period of political instability, which started with the Gezi Park protests in June 2013. The adverse selection component of the foreign trade ...

Posterior vitrectomy under topical anesthesia
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2007)Background: To determine the safety and efficacy of topical anesthesia in posterior vitrectomy. Methods: A total of 93 patients (93 eyes) with various vitreoretinal diseases not needing scleral buckling and with short predicted duration of surgery underwent posterior vitrectomy under topical (49 eyes) or retrobulbar (44 eyes) anesthesia. Patients in the topical group were sedated with neuroleptic anesthesia. Postoperatively patients were shown a visual analogue pain scale (VAPS) from 0 (no pain) ...

Production of electron-positron pairs by nuclear dissociation in peripheral heavy ion collisions
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2007)The STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider present data on electron-positron pair production accompanied by nuclear breakup at small impact parameters where the simultaneous excitation of the two ions mainly the giant dipole resonance GDR can occur. We calculate the electron-positron pair production cross section relevant for the STAR experimental setup and compare our results with the other calculations. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Random CapsNet forest model for imbalanced malware type classification task
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2021)Behavior of malware varies depending the malware types, which affects the strategies of the system protection software. Many malware classification models, empowered by machine and/or deep learning, achieve superior accuracies for predicting malware types. Machine learning-based models need to do heavy feature engineering work, which affects the performance of the models greatly. On the other hand, deep learning-based models require less effort in feature engineering when compared to that of the ...

The role of trade and FDI for CO2 emissions in Turkey: Nonlinear relationships
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2019)This paper examines the effects of foreign trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) on CO2 emissions in Turkey. We consider linear and nonlinear ARDL models and find significant asymmetric effects of exports, imports and FDI on CO2 emissions per capita. However, FD1 has no statistically significant long-run effects. In the long run, decreases in exports reduce CO2 emissions per capita but increases in exports have no statistically significant effects. Increases in imports push up CO2 emissions ...

Status of malondialdehyde, catalase and superoxide dismutase levels/activities in schoolchildren with iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia of Kashere and its environs in Gombe State, Nigeria
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2019)Background: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) or iron deficiency (ID) is by far the most common form of disorder affecting the cognitive development, physical growth and school performance of children in developing countries including Nigeria. Objectives: In the present study, we aimed to examine whether IDA or ID, or both are associated with oxidative stress or otherwise by assessing the perturbations in oxidative stress markers including malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase ...

Strategic Early Warning System for the French milk market: A graph theoretical approach to foresee volatility
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2017)This paper presents a new approach for developing a Strategic Early Warning System aiming to better detect and interpret weak signals. We chose the milk market as a case study in line with the recent call from the EU Commission for governance tools which help to better address such highly volatile markets. Furthermore on the first of April 2015 the new Common Agricultural Policy ended quotas for milk which led to a milk crisis in the EU. Thus we collaborated with milk experts to get their inputs ...

Synthesis, biological evaluation and molecular docking studies of bis-chalcone derivatives as xanthine oxidase inhibitors and anticancer agents
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2019)In this study, a series of B-ring fluoro substituted bis-chalcone derivatives were synthesized by Claisen-Schmidt condensation reactions and evaluated for their ability to inhibit xanthine oxidase (XO) and growth inhibitory activity against MCF-7 and Caco-2 human cancer cell lines, in vitro. According to the results obtained, the bis-chalcone with fluoro group at the 2 (4b) or 2,5-position (4g) of B-ring were found to be potent inhibitors of the enzyme with IC50 values in the low micromolar range. ...

The availability of abortion at state hospitals in Turkey: A national study
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier, 2017)Introduction: Abortion in Turkey has been legal since 1983 and remains so today. Despite this in 2012 the Prime Minister declared that in his opinion abortion was murder. Since then there has been growing evidence that abortion access particularly in state hospitals is being restricted although no new legislation has been offered. Objectives: The study aimed to determine the number of state hospitals in Turkey that provide abortions. Study design: The study employed a telephone survey in 2015-2016 ...
