Collective dynamics of random Janus oscillator networks
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(AMER PHYSICAL SOC, 2020)Janus oscillators have been recently introduced as a remarkably simple phase oscillator model that exhibits nontrivial dynamical patterns-such as chimeras, explosive transitions, and asymmetry-induced synchronization-that were once observed only in specifically tailored models. Here we study ensembles of Janus oscillators coupled on large homogeneous and heterogeneous networks. By virtue of the Ott-Antonsen reduction scheme, we find that the rich dynamics of Janus oscillators persists in the ...

Emotional Word Processing Within Configural Representations
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(ISTANBUL UNIV, 2020)The impact of emotions on cognitive processes has been studied intensively in the last years. The aim of the present study is to investigate the relationship between visuospatial attention processes and emotions. Visuospatial attention processes were investigated by using a localization task which required processing of the words that formed the configuration. In the localization task, participants were asked to indicate the position of the target word which matched the color of the fixation cross ...

Forecasting US movies box office performances in Turkey using machine learning algorithms
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(IOS PRESS, 2020)The motion picture industry is one of the largest industries worldwide and has significant importance in the global economy. Considering the high stakes and high risks in the industry, forecast models and decision support systems are gaining importance. Several attempts have been made to estimate the theatrical performance of a movie before or at the early stages of its release. Nevertheless, these models are mostly used for predicting domestic performances and the industry still struggles to ...

News-Sharing Repertoires on Social Media in the Context of Networked Authoritarianism: The Case of Turkey
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(USC ANNENBERG PRESS, 2020)Social media has become a primary gateway for users to access news, especially in authoritarian states with strictly controlled media environments. In such contexts, it is crucial to understand the motivations that prompt users to share news on social media. Our qualitative multimethod study presents three patterns of news-sharing repertoires on social media: (1) refraining from sharing and/or self-censorship, (2) sharing overtly political news, and (3) sharing news with political implications in ...

Do generous parental leave policies help top female earners?
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(OXFORD UNIV PRESS, 2020)Generous government-mandated parental leave is generally viewed as an effective policy to support women's careers around childbirth. But does it help women to reach top positions in the upper pay echelon of their firms? Using longitudinal employer-employee matched data for the entire Norwegian population, we address this question exploiting a series of reforms that expanded paid leave from 30 weeks in 1989 to 52 weeks in 1993. The representation of women in top positions has only moderately increased ...

ON SOFT ERRORS IN THE CONJUGATE GRADIENT METHOD: SENSITIVITY AND ROBUST NUMERICAL DETECTION
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(SIAM PUBLICATIONS, 2020)The conjugate gradient (CG) method is the most widely used iterative scheme for the solution of large sparse systems of linear equations when the matrix is symmetric positive definite. Although more than 60 years old, it is still a serious candidate for extreme-scale computations on large computing platforms. On the technological side, the continuous shrinking of transistor geometry and the increasing complexity of these devices affect dramatically their sensitivity to natural radiation and thus ...

Ɵ-deformed multi-dimensional fermion algebras
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(IOP PUBLISHING LTD, 2020)The conventional d-dimensional fermion algebra does not have a Hopf algebra structure. It is shown that this algebra can be deformed by introducing angular elements and by combining the commutative sine-cosine algebra with the Clifford algebra so that the resulting d-dimensional fermion algebra is a Hopf algebra.

Emotion Regulation Function of Autobiographical Remembering
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(TURKISH PSYCHOLOGISTS ASSOC, 2020)In this study, we aimed to investigate emotion regulation function of autobiograhical remembering within an integrative perspective. We asked participants to recall sadness, anger and happiness related events for emotion induction, then they recalled any random memory that came to their mind. In the latter remembering experience. Pre- and post-report emotionality ratings and phenomenological features of the recall were examined to test whether subsequent recall served to upregulate positive emotions. ...

HEALING TOUCH: PILGRIMAGE TO THE ROMAN SANCTUARY OF ASKLEPIOS AT KOS
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIV, 2020)This article describes the water monuments of benefactor Gaius Stertinius Xenophon at the Sanctuary of Asklepios at Kos in the first century CE. After his travels to Rome, Xenophon renovated the existing monuments of the sanctuary. He ornamented the Hellenistic arcuated retaining wall with the water channel carrying water from the springs of Bourina to meet the purificatory and healing needs of Asklepian patients. I demonstrate that with the addition of water, the Hellenistic arcuated wall makes ...

Developmental States in Sub-Saharan Africa: Reflections on State, Development, and Foreign Policy
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(ISTANBUL UNIV, 2020)This article examines discussions on state development in the context of sub-Saharan Africa by concentrating on the nexus of state, development, and foreign policy. First, the article notes ambiguity to still exist on what the essential characteristics of a developmental state are, both in general as well as in sub-Saharan Africa, mainly because developmental state scholars see development as a context-dependent process. Also, scholars often even analyze different aspects of developmental states ...

A multiple criteria decision analysis for agricultural planning of new crop alternatives in Turkey
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(IOS PRESS, 2021)Agriculture is a crucial and strategic sector for developing countries. The agricultural sector in Turkey has been suffering from regression in recent years due to several reasons. In an attempt to reverse this process, we analyze the cultivation possibilities of high profit-margin crops in Turkish lands and develop a ranking among eight alternative crops. To perform a comprehensive analysis encompassing several dimensions, three MCDM methods are utilized; namely fuzzy AHP to determine the weights ...

Science and flags: deconstructing Turkey's Antarctic strategy
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, 2021)This article explores Turkey's recent increased interest in the Antarctic by deconstructing how this interest contributes to the making of Antarctic nationalism(s). It makes two arguments. First, Turkey's status-seeking by being present in the Antarctic contributes to Antarctic nationalism(s) by invoking three distinct yet overlapping strands of nationalisms - banal, pragmatic-techno and Kemalist nationalisms, or what we term assemblage nationalism. Second, we argue that it was this nationalist ...

Effects of second-language acquisition on character introductions in 5-and 7-year-old bilingual and monolingual children's Frog story narratives
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(SAGE PUBLICATIONS LTD, 2021)This study investigates the effects of early second-language (L2) acquisition on introduction of characters in narrative discourse by comparing 5- and 7-year-old monolingual (first-language [L1] = Turkish) and bilingual (L1 = Turkish, L2 = English) children. Turkish does not have a grammaticalized article system like English which enables to investigate specific influences. The findings revealed that monolingual and bilingual children used similar forms while introducing characters; however, for ...

Machine type communications: key drivers and enablers towards the 6G era
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(SPRINGER, 2021)The recently introduced 5G New Radio is the first wireless standard natively designed to support critical and massive machine type communications (MTC). However, it is already becoming evident that some of the more demanding requirements for MTC cannot be fully supported by 5G networks. Alongside, emerging use cases and applications towards 2030 will give rise to new and more stringent requirements on wireless connectivity in general and MTC in particular. Next generation wireless networks, namely ...

A Comparative Study of Metaheuristic Algorithms for Wave Energy Converter Power Take-Off Optimisation: A Case Study for Eastern Australia
Authors:
Publisher and Date:(MDPI, 2021)One of the most encouraging sorts of renewable energy is ocean wave energy. In spite of a large number of investigations in this field during the last decade, wave energy technologies are recognised as neither mature nor broadly commercialised compared to other renewable energy technologies. In this paper, we develop and optimise Power Take-off (PTO) configurations of a well-known wave energy converter (WEC) called a point absorber. This WEC is a fully submerged buoy with three tethers, which was ...
