Acute aortic valve regurgitation secondary to blunt chest trauma
Authors:Unal, Mehmet; Demirsoy, Ergun; Göğüş, Abdullah; Arbatlı, Harun; Hamzaoǧlu, Azmi; Sonmez, Bingür
Publisher and Date:(Texas Heart Inst., 2001)Blunt injury to the cardiac valves leads to progressive acute ventricular failure which often requires urgent surgical management In this case report we describe an acute aortic valve rupture caused by air-bag inflation during an automobile accident. Laceration of an aortic valve cusp was treated successfully with urgent aortic valve replacement. A concomitant orthopedic injury was treated electively 15 days after cardiac surgery. Acute aortic valve rupture is a very rare complication of blunt ...

Anterior instrumentation for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis
Authors:Göğüş, Abdullah; Talu, Ufuk; Akman, S; Sar, C; Hamzaoǧlu, Azmi; Eralp, Levent
Publisher and Date:(Springer Verlag, 2001)Thirty-two patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis underwent anterior fusion with rigid single rod (third generation instrumentation) and titanium mesh cages. The mean follow-up was 31 (24-45) months and the mean age was 14.9 years. There were 8 patients with King type I 10 with type II 6 with type III 4 with type IV and 4 with lumbar curves. Titanium mesh cages were used in all the lumbar procedures and at the cranial and caudal ends of the instrumented area in thoracic cases. All the ...

Intraspinal metalloma resulting in late paraparesis
Authors:Tezer, Mehmet; Kuzgun, Unal; Hamzaoǧlu, Azmi; Ozturk, Cagatay; Kabukcuoglu, Fevziye; Sirvanci, Mustafa
Publisher and Date:(Springer, 2005)The metal-related complications caused by orthopedic implants have long been a concern but these problems have been considered mostly in the field of arthroplasty or internal fixation of fractures. The recent prevalence of spinal instrumentation has evoked a similar concern among spine surgeons. Here we present a case of intraspinal metallosis adjacent to the pedicular hook occurring after treatment of vertebral fracture by posterior spinal instrumentation and fusion and causing paraparesis at the ...

Myositis ossificans of psoas muscle: Magnetic resonance imaging findings
Authors:Sirvanci, Mustafa; Ganiyusufoglu, A. Kursad; Karaman, Kübra; Tezer, M; Hamzaoǧlu, Azmi
Publisher and Date:(Blackwell Munksgaard, 2004)Myositis ossificans is a benign localized self-limiting ossifying soft tissue mass with unknown pathogenesis. It may be confused with a malignant tumor of bone or soft tissues especially in the early stages of the disease. In this report we present a case of myositis ossificans affecting unilateral psoas muscle which to our knowledge is a very uncommon location. There was no history of trauma. We describe the imaging findings and clues to early diagnosis of myositis ossificans.

All but one had a double-major thoracic and lumbar curve. One had a mild scoliotic curve but severe thoracic lordosis. Anterior discectomy and fusion and posterior instrumentation was performed in a single stage in two patients while two had anterior and posterior surgery performed in two stages. Vertebral osteomyelitis after cardiac surgery
Authors:Akman, Şenol; Talu, Ufuk; Göğüş, Abdullah; Güden, Mustafa; Sirvanci, Mustafa; Hamzaoǧlu, Azmi
Publisher and Date:(Elsevier Science Inc, 2003)Background. Mediastinitis after open-heart surgery is a serious complication that has a decreasing incidence but still a significantly high mortality rate. Back pain may develop during the course of treatment for mediastinitis and this should suggest vertebral osteomyelitis in the differential diagnosis. Diagnosis of vertebral osteomyelitis may be difficult because of the insidious onset and delayed diagnosis and treatment may result in serious neurologic compromise and even death of the patient. ...
