Open data in agriculture: Sustainable model development for hazelnut farms using semantics
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018)Turkey accounts for 75% of the global hazelnut production and 70-75% of the exportation. Taking into account the socioeconomic importance of hazelnut, the stakeholders of hazelnut domain still have problems such as availability, meaningful, accuracy of the hazelnut related data. Providing data to stakeholders is crucial for sustainable agricultural activities. This data should be freely available to everyone to use and republish. With the aforementioned reasons "Open Data" is an efficient way in ...

KURDISH CINEMA AS A TRANSNATIONAL DISCOURSE GENRE: CINEMATIC VISIBILITY, CULTURAL RESILIENCE, AND POLITICAL AGENCY
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Cambrıdge Univ Press, 2014)Within the last few years, "Kurdish cinema" has emerged as a unique discursive subject in Turkey. Subsequent to and in line with efforts to unify Kurdish cultural production in diaspora, Kurdish intellectuals have endeavored to define and frame the substance of Kurdish cinema as an orienting framework for the production and reception of films by and about Kurds. In this article, my argument is threefold. First, Kurdish cinema has emerged as a national cinema in transnational space. Second, like ...

NATO's Evolution and Turkey's Contribution to the Transatlantic Security
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2015)Turkey has been member of NATO for more than six decades. Turkey's contributions to NATO's collective defense have evolved in quantity and quality in step with changes in the ends and means of security. In terms of its contributions to the alliance, two elements of continued stand out. The first one is Turkey's location. Its proximity to zones of risks and threats in NATO's assessments has turned Turkey into an asset. The other element is Turkey's ability to raise and maintain a large army at a ...

Revisiting the Mainstream Approaches of the Theories of International Relations
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2015)The view that we have reached the end of the "grand debates" in International Relations (IR) is widespread among the majority of IR scholars. Today, we observe that the references to the great theoretical debates in the prominent journals of IR have significantly diminished and that the most relevant debates have been among the scholars belonging to the same school specifically over empirical studies rather than between theories/paradigms. 'this paper, by revealing the challenges generated by the ...

Cybernetic narrative Modes of circularity, feedback and perception in new media artworks
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2015)Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore how second-order cybernetics (von Foerster, 2002) functions in new media artworks, specifically through information, system and user. While formulating the relationship between new media artworks and the discourses surrounding cybernetics the paper analyzes Popp's (2006) Bit. Fall, Wojtowicz's (2007) Elsewhere News and Zeren Goktan's (2013) The Counter, as exemplars of alternative methods of narration. This study further argues that these new media ...

A mathematical characterization of the gel point in sol-gel transition
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(IOP Publishing Ltd, 2015)We model the sol-gel transition in terms of Susceptible-Infected-Removed (SIR) and Susceptible-Exposed-Infected-Removed (SEIR) models and compare with experimental results. We show, numerically, that the "gel point" described as the onset of the gelation phenomena and measured experimentally, corresponds to an accumulation point of the extreme values of the derivatives of the gelation curve. We define the "critical point of a sigmoidal curve" as the limit of the points where the derivatives reach ...

Competing frameworks of Islamic law and secular civil law in Turkey: A case study on women's property and inheritance practices
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Pergamon-Elsevier Science LTD, 2015)The article stems from empirical research conducted with a group of women living in Istanbul who have conservative life styles bounded by an Islamic worldview. It attempts to illuminate the negotiation and contestation between the official civil law and Islamic law. The findings demonstrate that women inherit and bequeath property in a social setting where their gender roles are defined by their adherence to Islam. We argue that in Turkey women's inheritance practices are not determined solely in ...

On the uniqueness of epidemic models fitting a normalized curve of removed individuals
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Springer Heidelberg, 2015)The susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) and the susceptible-exposed-infected-removed (SEIR) epidemic models with constant parameters are adequate for describing the time evolution of seasonal diseases for which available data usually consist of fatality reports. The problems associated with the determination of system parameters starts with the inference of the number of removed individuals from fatality data, because the infection to death period may depend on health care factors. Then, one ...

AHP-BASED APPROACH TO EVALUATE SOLAR POWER PLANT LOCATION ALTERNATIVES
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Intl Inst Social & Economic Sci, 2016)Solar energy is the most readily available source of energy, and one of the most important sources of the renewable energy, because it is non-polluting and helps in lessening the greenhouse effect. Main problem of establishing a solar power plant is to determine its location. In the presence of many location alternatives and evaluation criteria, a multiple-criteria decision making problem arises. In this work, the location problem will be solved by using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to figure ...

Developing a measure for "connectorship" as a component of engaged leadership
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2016)Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a mixed methods study that explored how active community engaged and connected managers were in their local and broader communities (engaged leadership, EL). The paper specifically investigates an under researched aspect of EL - "connectorship" - with focus on developing a measure for connectorship. The authors present the conceptual framework for EL, followed by the operationalization of "connectorship" construct. Design/method ...

Branding Cities in the Age of Social Media: A Comparative Assessment of Local Government Performance
Yazarlar:
Yayıncı ve Tarih:(Springer-Verlag Berlin, 2016)This chapter is a comparative study of how three local governments-Cape Town (South Africa), Philadelphia (Pennsylvania, USA), and Myrtle Beach (South Carolina, USA)-use social media platforms in their city branding attempts. Theoretical arguments in the fields of corporate and city branding point out the potential of these new communication platforms to change how brand-related content is created and shared with target audiences. However, the practice is understudied. The study first explains the ...
