"Gazete sütunlarında öteki olmak türk yazılı basınında ötekileştirme - Etnik kimlikler üzerine bir söylem analizi

Abstract

Bu arastirma Turkiye'de otekilestirme surecinde medyanin nasil bir dille etkin hale geldigini ve kendini gosterdigini sorgulamaktadir. Ulusal kimliklerin gazete haberleri araciligiyla yeniden uretilisine Kurt ve Ermeni kimligi ornekleri uzerinden bakilmistir. Turkiye'de etnik tansiyonu artiran uc olay secilmis ve bu olaylarin ardindan yedi gunluk gazetenin haber ve yorumlari soylem analiziyle incelenmistir. Yapilan calisma sonunda farkli gazetelerde farkli yogunluk ve sekillerde de olsa otekilestirmenin varligina rastlanmistir. Bir ust kimlik olarak “Turk”luk uzerine kurulan milli bilincin pekistirilmesi surecinde gunluk gazetelerin onemli bir rol oynadigi gorulmustur. Turk kimligi tanimlanirken oteki ihtiyaci diger etnisiteler kullanilarak karsilanmistir. Gerek semboller ve vurgularla gerek siyasilerin acik milliyetci mesajlar iceren sozlerini naklederek gerekse haberleri sunus bicimleri ve yazarlarinin yorumlariyla gazeteler bu islevi bilincli ya da bilincsiz yerine getirmistir. Turkiye’nin dunyanin gozundeki prestiji ve ununun iyi olmasi gazetelerin ortak kaygisidir.

This research examines the influence of mainstream media through the process of othering ethnic and religious minorities in Turkey. The reproduction of national identities through newspaper texts is analyzed via examples of Kurdish and Armenian identities.The study focuses on three events which led to an increase of tension, and newspaper stories and columns about these events are analyzed through discourse analysis. The research shows that traces of `othering? in varying degrees appear in those stories and columns. During the process of imposing Turkishness as a super- ordinate identity it is concluded that daily newspapers act as an effective agent in this process. While Turkish identity is defined, the need of the other is fulfilled via the use of different ethnicities. Newspapers accomplished this task, consciously or unconsciously, through the use of symbols and emphasis by quoting the nationalist messages of politicians as well as the discourses used in the stories and the opinions of columnists. The common concern of newspapers is to protect or improve the `image? of Turkey in the international arena.
