The short film "Manual to Life," is on the repetitions the contemporary person makes in his daily life in order to lead his life and the consumption based way of life, which is considered to be "modern life." The aim of the film is to draw the audience's attention to the abrasive impact technology and city life has on a human being. Through a fictional character, the film assumes a critical approach and maintains a rhythmic editing, and venturing forth from the reality it wishes to create it seeks to make the audience question the way of life imposed upon them. The film analyzes the process during which the unhappy, modern man cannot help but become an object and questions the purpose of his existence. The protagonist coincidentally finds and reads the "Manual to Life," and thus is the narrative curve of the film is shaped. The thoughts that arise in the protagonist's mind lets him take a look at his own life from the outside and experience awareness even if it's only for a limited amount of time. We do not know the name of the protagonist. His name is of no importance because he simply symbolizes the average man that behaves the way anybody at any given time may behave. His way of life, which reflects popular culture, denotes the life-style of one or the other member of the society. As he reads the book he found he questions his own life. Thus the book, which depicts the reality the protagonist's in, actually criticizes the audience. The purpose thus is to tear down the fourth wall. The camera has in various scales taken everyday, ordinary city frames with no intervention. In addition to those images the story is told through images taken from the protagonist's life and with the help of external images it is aimed to increase the emotional intensity. The purpose has been to show instances that have happened or may happen in a person's life. The purpose of the long and middle shots is to inform the audience about the protagonist and the place, and the close and zoomed in shots serve to show the common points of behavior among the people that pass us by everyday. The times when the protagonist is in the frame seeks to reflect the process of objectification of man, and when he is out of the frame the film urges the audience to question its own place within the system and society. During shooting the camera has recorded the natural light and the sounds of the place with least intervention possible. The film has a three layered narrative structure. The introduction, which employs the Jump Cut technique so as to have a smooth flow, aims to describe the world in which the story is told and who the protagonist is. The narrative curve is shaped after the protagonist finds and reads the book. The sounds we hear when the protagonist reads the book is accompanied with the aforementioned images. The slowly progressing rhythm of the sound and image synchronization we find in the beginning of the film gets increasingly faster towards the end and sets the scene for the chaotic atmosphere that is to occur in the final scene. The final scene comprises sounds, images, sound bridges and graphic transitions which aim to emphasize the confusion the protagonist has. This intense rhythm which slowly accelerates becomes disturbing right before the moment of awareness. And in the resolution part the confusion ends and the set up rhythm becomes static with the momentary awareness of the protagonist. The moral of the story is given and the film ends.en_US
