New dynamics in transnational political experience: A narrative study of turkish young adults with higher education in Germany

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Almanya'da yüksek öğrenim gören Türk genç yetişkinlerin siyasi deneyimlerine ilişkin kişisel anlatıları analiz etmektedir. Bu tezde anlatı analizi yöntemi kullanılarak, anlatılarına ulusötesi mekanların bir parçası olarak yaklaşılmaktadır. Bu nedenle, bu çalışma, siyasi deneyimlere ilişkin kişisel anlatıların yalnızca siyasi perspektiflere değil, aynı zamanda medya temsillerinin ve kendi kimliklerinin algılarına da nasıl bağlı olduğunu göstermektedir. Kişisel anlatıları ulusötesi alanın karmaşık zeminine yerleştirirken, analizde gösterilenler daha geniş bir popülasyona genellenemez veya hipotezleri test etmek için kullanılamaz. Bu çalışma daha çok, görüşülen kişilerin siyasi konuları tartışmaktan ulusötesi siyasi eylem biçimleri olarak kişisel sorumluluklar almaya kadar değişen günlük uygulamalarını açıklamaktadır.

This study analyzes the personal narratives on the political experiences of Turkish young adults with higher education in Germany. Using the method of narrative analysis, in this thesis, their narratives are approached as a part of transnational spaces. Therefore, this study shows how the personal narratives on political experiences are attached not only to political perspectives but also to the perceptions of media representations and that of their own self-identities. While locating personal narratives in the complex ground of transnational space, what is shown in the analysis cannot be generalized to a wider population or used for testing hypotheses. This study rather explains interviewees' everyday practices that vary from discussing political issues to having personal responsibilities as forms of transnational political actions.
