Article Citation Count: 1A 2020 vision for the Black Sea region: the Commission on the Black Sea proposes(Routledge Journals Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2010) Aydın, Mustafa; Trıantafyllou, DımıtrıosThe Black Sea region is coming into its own although it is at times a contested and dangerous neighbourhood. Despite heightened interest in the region its real priorities and needs are still being largely ignored by insiders and outsiders alike. What is needed are regional solutions for regional problems. The authors present the key findings and recommendations of the Commission on the Black Sea a civil society initiative comprising a number of current and former policy-makers scholars and practitioners both from within the region and from outside with the purpose of contributing to a joint vision and a common strategy for the Black Sea region by developing new knowledge in areas of key concern.Article Citation Count: 12An Analysis of International Relations Academics in Turkey and their approaches to the field: TRIP 2014 Faculty Survey Results(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2016) Aydın, Mustafa; Hisarlıoğlu, Fulya; Yazgan, KorhanDespite the increasing interest in the studies inquiring the limits autonomous character of and the interactions between the International Relations (IR) discipline and other academic fields the scope and scale of empirical research on these issues are relatively small. In order to contribute to the discussion on the limits and peculiarities of the IR discipline and to shed light on the development current status and major characteristics of the IR studies in Turkey its place in the global IR discipline and the views of LR. scholars on major issues on the global regional and national agenda two surveys were conducted by the International Relations Council of Turkey (IRCT) in 2007 and 2009. Later on the IRTC collaborated with the Institute for the Theory and Practice of International Relations at the College of William and Mary to conduct further surveys in 2011 and 2014. This paper presents findings of the last survey on Turkey based on the worldwide research simultaneously conducted in 31 different countries in September 2014.Book Part Citation Count: 5Changing dynamics of Turkish foreign and security policies in the Caucasus(Ashgate Publishing Ltd, 2011) Aydın, Mustafa[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation Count: 5Civilizational futures: Clashes or alternative visions in the age of globalization?(Elsevier Science, 2010) Aydın, Mustafa; Özen, ÇınarThis article underlines the existing similarities between Samuel Huntington's civilizational approach hypothesis and the fundamentals of political Islam. The similarity pertains to the argument related to the gradual weakening of nation-states which also constitutes the main theme of the globalization debate. The civilizational approach and political Islam signify new efforts to reach a much larger political community and organization in world politics. Both of them argue that the formation of new political actor(s) is replacing the old nation-states across religious and cultural affinities. The terrorist organization Al-Qaeda is trying to legitimize its political violence by manipulating the weakness of the nation-states and the utopia of the formation of a much more comprehensive political community and political organization through Islam. Huntington's clash of civilizations thesis indirectly provides a base for Al-Qaeda's rhetoric and a certain type of justification for its terror activities since the theory argues for the inevitability of the conflict between civilizations regardless of their political regimes (liberal or totalitarian) with civilizations being determined by their cultural and religious differences a theme that is used by the ideologues of political Islam. Book Part Citation Count: 2Geopolitics and gas-transit security through pipelines(Springer International Publishing, 2020) Aydın, Mustafa; Ediger, Şevket Volkan; Aydın, MustafaHydrocarbons are valuable only if they can be transited from where they are produced to where they are consumed. Despite the enduring importance of transit to the global energy system, the topic did not begin to be extensively analyzed until contentious relations between Russia and Ukraine disrupted natural gas flows to Europe in 2006. This chapter examines the geopolitics and security of transiting gas through pipelines by exploring the connection between geography, global energy strategies, and natural gas markets. Gas has grown in recent years as a percentage of global energy consumption and is helping the world transition to a cleaner energy regime. At the same time, it is intensifying the contest for and control of gas-transit routes. Russia, the world’s second-largest producer, has built new pipelines to Europe since 2006 in order to diversify its flow from relying on Ukraine, while the USA, the world’s largest gas producer, is increasingly exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) through sea routes mostly controlled by the US navy. We argue that geostrategic calculations will more profoundly affect gas transit in the future and that countries that rely solely on market or commercial factors for their gas-transit security will become increasingly vulnerable to geopolitical volatility.Article Citation Count: 0International Relations in Turkey: An Evaluation on the Findings of TRIP 2018(Uluslararası Ilişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2019) Aydın, Mustafa; Dizdaroğlu, CihanIn parallel with the worldwide studies focusing on the International Relations (IR) discipline, there have been works looking into the transformation of the IR discipline in Turkey and its contribution to the global knowledge production. In order to provide sound data for these studies, International Relations Council of Turkey (IRCT) conducted two surveys among the Turkish IR academics in 2007 and 2009, and have been cooperating with the Institute for the Theory and Practice of International Relations at the College of William and Mary since then on the Teaching, Research and International Policy (TRIP) project. The TRIP surveys that aim to understand the epistemological and ontological limits, autonomous character of the IR discipline as well as the theoretical, metodological and pedagocial approaches in which IR scholars used in their teaching and research activities, also help to comprehend the place of the Turkish IR scholars within the global IR discipline. This paper presents Turkey-related findings of the lastest survey, which was simultaneously conducted in 35 different countries between February and July 2018.Article Citation Count: 8Levantine Challenges on Turkish Foreign Policy(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2018) Aydın, Mustafa; Dizdaroğlu, CihanTurkey's perception of the Levant has been hazy in modern times and the country has not constructed a holistic approach towards the region until recently despite the fact that Turkey has sought closer cooperation with the Levantine countries since the late 1990s. In addition to Turkey's willingness to open up to the region recent international developments such as the discovery of hydrocarbons off the coast of Israel Egypt and Cyprus the outbreak of the Arab Spring and changes in the regional balance of power have provided momentum for Turkey's engagement with the region. This paper argues that although these factors have provided space for Turkey to play a more assertive role in the region the country has thus far failed to present a successful region-wide strategy or carve up an influence zone.Article Citation Count: 2Revisiting the Mainstream Approaches of the Theories of International Relations(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2015) Aydın, Mustafa; Akgül Açıkmeşe, SinemThe view that we have reached the end of the "grand debates" in International Relations (IR) is widespread among the majority of IR scholars. Today, we observe that the references to the great theoretical debates in the prominent journals of IR have significantly diminished and that the most relevant debates have been among the scholars belonging to the same school specifically over empirical studies rather than between theories/paradigms. 'this paper, by revealing the challenges generated by the "grand debates" and the discussions on whether or not there will a return to the "grand debates", incorporates some ideas on the current status as well as the future of IR in Turkey and the world. Taking from this point, this paper has been prepared as an introductory article to this special issue which has been compiled in order to remind the readers on the mainstream theories of IR that have been subject to the "grand debates" and that will shape the future discussions on the state of the IR theory.Editorial Citation Count: 3Roundtable Discussion on Homegrown Theorizing(Center Foreign Policy & Peace Research, 2018) Aydın, Mustafa; Aydın, Mustafa; Baran, Emre; Makarychev, Andrey; Smith, Karen; Gozen, Ramazan; Ipek, Pinar; Kuru, Deniz; Ozdemir, Haluk; Shih, Chih-Yu; Mallavarapu, Siddharth; Chen, Ching-Chang; Kostem, Seckin; Ersoy, Eyup; Jorgensen, Knud Erik; Esen, Berk[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation Count: 1Security in Turkey: Perception Politics and Structure(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2014) Aydın, Mustafa; Ereker, FulyaThe aim of this study is to analyze the foundations evolution and implementation of the se curity and strategy culture of Turkey as a country whose society has been constructed through a particular security identification. The collapse of the Soviet Union removed the century-old Soviet/Russian threat while at the same time created a power vacuum on Turkey's borders. In this environment Turkey became an important actor in the region as a result of its strong historical connections. While Turkey had traditionally avoided involvement in regional politics it has since been drawn into the volatile new politics of the region. After twenty years Turkey has become one of the important players in a region where its involvement has particularly increased since the August 2008 with its suggestion to establish Caucasus Cooperation and Stability Platform. Although its attempt to further engage Armenia is halted now and economic and political conditions in the region are unlikely to stabilize for some years it is without doubt that Turkey will continue to create new networks of interdependency between Ankara and the regional capitals.Article Citation Count: 5Turkish Policy towards the Wider Black Sea and the EU Connection(Routledge Journals Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2014) Aydın, MustafaThe Black Sea has been on the global agenda since the end of the Cold War ; and Turkey has appeared as a rising regional power in the region. Turkey's policies in the Black Sea have aimed at the creation of region-wide multilateral cooperation schemes. Starting with the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization it initiated several institutions with varying degrees of success. In addition to creating a stable environment conducive to increased cooperation and enhanced trade relationships sustaining maritime security through an elaborate balance of power in the region has been important for Turkey. While it supported closer relations with and further integration into the European Union Turkey does not wish to see competitive projects aimed at the region evolving into a cause for instability.
