To enable the simultaneous incorporation of all these different functions into composite gels, the best doping material alternatives are two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), which have been used in so many applications recently, such as energy storage units, opto-electronic devices and catalysis. They have the capacity to regulate optical, electronic and mechanical properties of basic molecular hydrogels when incorporated into them. In this study, 2D materials (WS2, MoS2 and MoSe2)-doped polyacrylamide (PAAm) gels were prepared via the free radical crosslinking copolymerization technique at room temperature. The gelation process and amount of the gels were investigated depending on the optical properties and band gap energies. Band gap energies of composite gels containing different amounts of TMD were calculated and found to be in the range of 2.48-2.84 eV, which is the characteristic band gap energy range of promising semiconductors. Our results revealed that the microgel growth mechanism and gel point of PAAm composite incorporated with 2D materials can be significantly tailored by the amount of 2D materials. Furthermore, tunable band gap energies of these composite gels are crucial for many applications such as biosensors, cartilage repair, drug delivery, tissue regeneration, wound dressing. Therefore, our study will contribute to the understanding of the correlation between the optical and electronic properties of such composite gels and will help to increase the usage areas so as to obtain multifunctional composite gels.Article Citation Count: 13D-printed actuator-based beam-steering approach for improved physical layer security in visible light communication(Optica Publishing Group, 2022) Erdem, Mehmet Can; Gurcuoglu, Oguz; Panayırcı, Erdal; Kurt, Gunes Karabulut; Ferhanoglu, OnurIn this study, we present the design, manufacture, and implementation of a 3D-printed lens scanner-based beam steering for use in visible light communication (VLC) applications. The 5 cm x 5 cm scanner is designed for low-cost 3D printing with fused deposition modeling using polylactic acid. Scanning is facilitated through electromagnetic actuation of the lens frame, carrying a conventional 25 mm lens, from two nearly orthogonal directions. The serpentine spring that connects the lens frame to the external frame is tailored to offer similar spring constants in the directions of actuation and has minimal (<1.5 mm) sag due to the mass of the lens. The manufactured actuator was integrated on a miniaturized VLC test bed (70 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm). Using the test bed, we characterized the applied voltage versus beam displacement behavior of the actuator in the lateral plane and demonstrated beam steering on amoving target with face-recognition feedback. The proposed scheme was targeted to offer an improved security measure in VLC through tracking the legitimate receiver (i.e., via face recognition) and uses the feedback to steer the focused light onto the targeted device. The joint use of focusing and steering features allows for the legitimate receiver to roam within the room while enjoying the improved secrecy due to the focused light. We calculate the secrecy capacity for the demonstrated approach, which compares favorably with a number of jamming, spatial modulation, and beam-forming counterparts. The presented actuator can be used with larger room dimensions, yet upscaling to larger illumination units will require the use of a lens having smaller focus to address a larger total steering angle. (C) 2022 Optica Publishing GroupArticle Citation Count: 3Abortion services at hospitals in Istanbul(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2017) O'Neil, Mary LouObjective: Despite the existence of a liberal law on abortion in Turkey there is growing evidence that actually securing an abortion in Istanbul may prove difficult. This study aimed to determine whether or not state hospitals and private hospitals that accept state health insurance in Istanbul are providing abortion services and for what indications. Method: Between October and December 2015 a mystery patient telephone survey of 154 hospitals 43 public and 111 private in Istanbul was conducted. Results: 14% of the state hospitals in Istanbul perform abortions without restriction as to reason provided in the current law while 60% provide the service if there is a medical necessity. A quarter of state hospitals in Istanbul do not provide abortion services at all. 48.6% of private hospitals that accept the state health insurance also provide for abortion without restriction while 10% do not provide abortion services under any circumstances. Key conclusions: State and private hospitals in Istanbul are not providing abortion services to the full extent allowed under the law. The low numbers of state hospitals offering abortions without restriction indicates a de facto privatization of the service. This same trend is also visible in many private hospitals partnering with the state that do not provide abortion care. The absolute configuration of both fractions was established using vibrational circular dichroism. The in vitro monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory profiles were evaluated for the racemate and both enantiomers separately for the two isoforms of the enzyme. The racemic compound and both enantiomers were found to inhibit hMAO-A selectively and competitively. In particular the R enantiomer was detected as an exceptionally potent and a selective MAO-A inhibitor (K-i = 0.85 x 10(-3) +/- 0.05 x 10(-3) mu M and SI: 2.35 x 10(-5)) whereas S was determined as poorer compound than R in terms of K-i and SI (0.184 +/- 0.007 and 0.001). Using age-appropriate measures of acculturation attitudes and psychosocial outcomes it was found that (a) children generally favored an integrationist attitude and this was more pronounced among older (8-10 years) than in younger (5-7 years) children and (b) temporal changes in social self-esteem and peer acceptance were associated with different acculturation attitudes held initially as shown by latent growth curve analyses. However a supplementary time-lagged regression analysis revealed that children's earlier integrationist attitudes may be associated with more emotional symptoms (based on teachers' ratings) 6 months later. Docking methods are often inaccurate and the results have to be refined and re-ranked to obtain native-like complexes and remove outliers. In a previous work we introduced AccuRefiner a machine learning based tool for refining protein-protein complexes. Given a docked complex the refinement tool produces a small set of refined versions of the input complex with lower root-mean-square-deviation (RMSD) of atomic positions with respect to the native structure. The method employs a unique ranking tool that accurately predicts the RMSD of docked complexes with respect to the native structure. In this work we use a deep learning network with a similar set of features and five layers. We show that a properly trained deep learning network can accurately predict the RMSD of a docked complex with 1.40 angstrom error margin on average by approximating the complex relationship between a wide set of scoring function terms and the RMSD of a docked structure. The network was trained on 35000 unbound docking complexes generated by RosettaDock. We tested our method on 25 different putative docked complexes produced also by RosettaDock for five proteins that were not included in the training data. The results demonstrate that the high accuracy of the ranking tool enables AccuRefiner to consistently choose the refinement candidates with lower RMSD values compared to the coarsely docked input structures.Article Citation Count: 5The acquisition and use of relative clauses in Turkish-learning children's conversational interactions: a cross-linguistic approach(Cambridge University Press, 2019) Uzundağ, Berna A.; Küntay, Aylin C.Using a cross-linguistic approach, we investigated Turkish-speaking children's acquisition and use of relative clauses (RCs) by examining longitudinal child-caregiver interactions and cross-sectional peer conversations. Longitudinal data were collected from 8 children between the ages of 8 and 36 months. Peer conversational corpus came from 78 children aged between 43 and 64 months. Children produced RCs later than in English (Diessel, 2004) and Mandarin (Chen & Shirai, 2015), and demonstrated increasing semantic and structural complexity with age. Despite the morphosyntactic difficulty of object RCs, and prior experimental findings showing a subject RC advantage, preschool-aged children produced object RCs, which were highly frequent in child-directed speech, as frequently as subject RCs. Object RCs in spontaneous speech were semantically less demanding (with pronominal subjects and inanimate head nouns) than the stimuli used in prior experiments. Laceration of an aortic valve cusp was treated successfully with urgent aortic valve replacement. A concomitant orthopedic injury was treated electively 15 days after cardiac surgery. Acute aortic valve rupture is a very rare complication of blunt chest trauma. However, it is unclear which strategies are most likely to motivate people to change their climate beliefs and behaviors. Here, we tested 11 expert-crowdsourced interventions on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and an effortful tree-planting behavioral task. Across 59,440 participants from 63 countries, the interventions' effectiveness was small, largely limited to nonclimate skeptics, and differed across outcomes: Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (by 2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), and no intervention increased the more effortful behavior-several interventions even reduced tree planting. Last, the effects of each intervention differed depending on people's initial climate beliefs. Mobile health has become a new trend for health service providers through which they have been shifting their services from clinical consultations to online apps. These apps usually offer basic features at no cost and charge a premium for advanced features. Although diet apps are now more common and have a larger user base, in general, there is a gap in literature addressing why users intend to use diet apps. We used Diyetkolik, Turkey's most widely used online dietetics platform for 7 years, as a case study to understand the behavioral intentions of users. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors that influence the behavioral intentions of users to adopt and use mobile health apps. We used the Technology Acceptance Model and extended it by exploring other factors such as price-value, perceived risk, and trust factors in order to assess the technology acceptance of users. Methods: We conducted quantitative research on the Diyetkolik app users by using random sampling. Valid data samples gathered from 658 app users were analyzed statistically by applying structural equation modeling. Results: Statistical findings suggested that perceived usefulness (P<.001), perceived ease of use (P<.001), trust (P<.001), and price-value (P<.001) had significant relationships with behavioral intention to use. However, no relationship between perceived risk and behavioral intention was found (P=.99). Additionally, there was no statistical significance for age (P=.09), gender (P=.98), or previous app use experience (P=.14) on the intention to use the app. Conclusions: This research is an invaluable addition to Technology Acceptance Model literature. The results indicated that 2 external factors (trust and price-value) in addition to Technology Acceptance Model factors showed statistical relevance with behavioral intention to use and improved our understanding of user acceptance of a mobile health app. The third external factor (perceived risk) did not show any statistical relevance regarding behavioral intention to use. Most users of the Diyetkolik dietetics app were hesitant in purchasing dietitian services online. Users should be frequently reassured about the security of the platform and the authenticity of the platform's dietitians to ensure that users' interactions with the dietitians are based on trust for the platform and the brand.Article Citation Count: 6Affective Modulation of Working Memory Maintenance: The Role of Positive and Negative Emotions(UNIV ECONOMICS) Gökçe, Ahu; Zinchenko, Artyom; Annac, Efsun; Conci, Markus; Geyer, ThomasThe present study investigated the impact of task-irrelevant emotional images on the retention of information in spatial working memory (WM). Two experiments employed a delayed matching-to-sample task where participants had to maintain the locations of four briefly presented squares. After a short retention interval, a probe item appeared and participants were required to indicate whether the probe position matched one of the previously occupied square positions. During the retention interval, task-irrelevant negative, positive, or neutral emotional pictures were presented. The results revealed a dissociation between negative and positive affect on the participants' ability to hold spatial locations in WM. While negative affective pictures reduced WM capacity, positive pictures increased WM capacity relative to the neutral images. Moreover, the specific valence and arousal of a given emotional picture was also related to WM performance: While higher valence enhanced WM capacity, higher levels of arousal in turn reduced WM capacity. Together, our findings suggest that emotions up- or down-regulate attention to items in WM and thus modulate the short-term storage of visual information in memory.Article Citation Count: 40Air quality prediction using CNN plus LSTM-based hybrid deep learning architecture(Springer Heidelberg, 2022) Özmen, Atilla; Ogrenci, Arif Selcuk; Ozmen, AtillaAir pollution prediction based on variables in environmental monitoring data gains further importance with increasing concerns about climate change and the sustainability of cities. Modeling of the complex relationships between these variables by sophisticated methods in machine learning is a promising field. The objectives of this work are to develop a supervised model for the prediction of air pollution by using real sensor data and to transfer the model between cities. The combination of a convolutional neural network and a long short-term memory deep neural network model was proposed to predict the concentration of air pollutants in multiple locations of a city by using spatial-temporal relationships. Two approaches have been adopted: the univariate model contains the information of one pollutant whereas the multivariate model contains the information of all pollutants and meteorology data for prediction. The study was carried out for different pollutants which are in the publicly available data of the cities of Barcelona, Kocaeli, and Istanbul. The hyperparameters of the model (filter, frame, and batch sizes; number of convolutional/LSTM layers and hidden units; learning rate; and parameters for sample selection, pooling, and validation) were tuned to determine the architecture that achieved the lowest test error. The proposed model improved the prediction performance (measured by the root mean square error) by 11-53% for particulate matter, 20-31% for ozone, 9-47% for nitrogenoxides, and 18-46% for sulfurdioxide with respect to the 1-hidden layer long short-term memory networks utilized in the literature. The multivariate model without using meteorological data revealed the best results. Regarding transfer learning, the network weights were transferred from the source city to the target city. The model has more accurate prediction performance with the transfer of the network from Kocaeli to Istanbul as those neighbor cities have similar air pollution and meteorological characteristics.Article Citation Count: 2Altered Dynamics of S. aureus Phosphofructokinase via Bond Restraints at Two Distinct Allosteric Binding Sites(Academic Press Ltd- Elsevier Science Ltd, 2022) Celebi, Metehan; Akten, Ebru DemetThe effect of perturbation at the allosteric site was investigated through several replicas of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations conducted on bacterial phosphofructokinase (SaPFK). In our previous work, an alternative binding site was estimated to be allosteric in addition to the experimentally reported one. To highlight the effect of both allosteric sites on receptor's dynamics, MD runs were carried out on apo forms with and without perturbation. Perturbation was achieved via incorporating multiple bond restraints for residue pairs located at the allosteric site. Restraints applied to the predicted site caused one dimer to stiffen, whereas an increase in mobility was detected in the same dimer when the experimentally resolved site was restrained. Fluctuations in C-alpha-C-alpha distances which is used to disclose residues with high potential of communication indicated a marked increase in signal transmission within each dimer as the receptor switched to a restrained state. Cross-correlation of positional fluctuations indicated an overall decrease in the magnitude of both positive and negative correlations when restraints were employed on the predicted allosteric site whereas an exact opposite effect was observed for the reported site. Finally, mutual correspondence between positional fluctuations noticeably increased with restraints on predicted allosteric site, whereas an opposite effect was observed for restraints applied on experimentally reported one. In view of these findings, it is clear that the perturbation of either one of two allosteric sites effected the dynamics of the receptor with a distinct and contrasting character. NihanInflectional morphology provides a unique platform for a discussion of whether morphological productivity is rule-based or analogy-based. The present study testing 140 children (range = 29 to 97 months; M(SD) = 64.1(18.8)) on an elicited production task investigated the acquisition of the irregular distribution in the Turkish aorist. Results suggested that to discover the allomorphs of the Turkish aorist, children initially carried out similarity comparisons between analogous exemplars, which helped them tap into phonological features to induce generalizations for regulars and irregulars. Thereafter to tackle the irregularity, children entertained competing hypotheses yielding overregularizations and irregularizations. While the trajectory of overregularizations implicated the gradual formulation of an abstraction based on type-frequency, irregularizations suggested both intrusion of analogous exemplars and children's attempts to default to an erroneous micro-generalization. By employing a network science perspective this research is aimed to understand an information network establishing connections among and between information seekers and providers. We found that such a connection network surfaces most of the essential characteristics of a typical complex network. Furthermore a detailed structural analysis shows some intriguing relations and connection behaviours in the network. The patient had a clinical history of recurrent attacks of pancreatitis cholangitis and cholecystitis that were confirmed by abnormal laboratory values. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography revealed a 20 mm long junction of choledoc and pancreatic duct and uncinate process draining into the minor papilla. On MR cholangiopancreatography strictures at the junction of hepatic duct increased gallbladder wall thickness and intraductal stone in the pancreatic duct were demonstrated as complementary findings. The mean follow-up was 31 (24-45) months and the mean age was 14.9 years. There were 8 patients with King type I 10 with type II 6 with type III 4 with type IV and 4 with lumbar curves. Titanium mesh cages were used in all the lumbar procedures and at the cranial and caudal ends of the instrumented area in thoracic cases. All the patients were immobilized in an orthosis for 3-6 months postoperatively. Mean preoperative primary coronal Cobb angle of 56 degrees was improved to 8.6 degrees. Average correction rate was 84%. Sagittal balance was restored with a mean thoracic kyphosis of 28 degrees and a mean lumbar lordosis of 38 degrees. Spontaneous secondary curve decompensation did not occur and postoperative thoracolumbar junctional kyphosis was not seen. C. albicans is the major pathogen identified in candidiasis; however, non-albicans Candida spp. with antifungal resistance are now more prevalent. Azoles are first-choice antifungal drugs for candidiasis; however, they are ineffective for certain infections caused by the resistant strains. Azoles block ergosterol synthesis by inhibiting fungal CYP51, which leads to disruption of fungal membrane permeability. In this study, we screened for antifungal activity of an in-house azole library of 65 compounds to identify hit matter followed by a molecular modeling study for their CYP51 inhibition mechanism. Antifungal susceptibility tests against standard Candida spp. including C. albicans revealed derivatives 12 and 13 as highly active. Furthermore, they showed potent antibiofilm activity as well as neglectable cytotoxicity in a mouse fibroblast assay. According to molecular docking studies, 12 and 13 have the necessary binding characteristics for effective inhibition of CYP51. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations of the C. albicans CYP51 (CACYP51) homology model's catalytic site complexed with 13 were stable demonstrating excellent binding.
