The institutionalization of practices of civic and political participation has been a clear objective of both New Right and New Labour governments and more recently of the coalition government led by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. Regardless of the ideological differences, across time active citizenship has developed assuming common patterns, with specific characteristics that put emphasis on individual and collective responsibility, on the development of community cohesion to solve specific social problems and on the provision to the Third Sector of specific tasks in order to deliver public services. This approach is not free from ambiguities, as it is argued in the presentation of the data from the analysis. Activists vindicate their autonomy, claiming that New Labour reforms as well as the recent Big Society approach have been one sided and in some cases favored the emergence of coalition groups in spite of the survival of smaller organizations. The chapter also focuses on the active participation of British organizations in European networks and at the opportunities that EU funding has opened for activating projects of transnational solidarity. Theoretical arguments in the fi elds of corporate and city branding point out the potential of these new communication platforms to change how brand-related content is created and shared with target audiences. However the practice is understudied. The study fi rst explains the potential of social media in branding through media ecology city brand communication and brand co-creation theories. Second the performance of the aforementioned three cities on social media is evaluated by analyzing their Twitter and Facebook presence. The fi ndings suggest that there is room for improvement for local governments in their employment of social media for city branding campaigns. Mr. Yilmaz worried about the bottlenecks that had limited further user acceptance and engagement. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2017.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 3Cash Holdings and Corporate Governance: Evidence From Turkey(IGI Global, 2019) Akben Selçuk, Elif; Selçuk, Elif Akben; Şener, Pınar; Şener Tournus, PınarThis chapter investigates the empirical factors affecting corporate cash holdings with special emphasis on corporate governance variables for a sample of Turkish-listed nonfinancial firms over the period 2006 to 2010. The findings reveal a significant non-linear relation between family ownership and cash holdings. In addition, while board structure does not significantly affect the level of cash holdings, tunneling increases cash reserves of firms. In our work, we consider wavelength dependency, effect of realistic light sources as well as different types of reflections such as specular and mixed cases of diffuse and specular. We use nonsequential ray tracing algorithms to calculate the detected power and path lengths from source to detector for each ray. These are then processed to yield the channel impulse responses for various indoor environments. We further present a channel characterization study where channel parameters such as channel DC gain, root mean square delay spread, coherence bandwidth, mean excess delay are calculated for different environments.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 0Choice of Finance in an Emerging Market: the Impact of Independent Decisions Politics and Religion(Springer International Publishing, 2017) Davutyan, Nurhan; Davutyan, Nurhan; Öztürkkal, Belma; Öztürkkal, Ayşe BelmaThis paper is based on a KONDA 1 Research and Consultancy 2 survey conducted in May 2014 on 2607 people forming a representative sample of the Turkish population. It focuses on how people’s religious and political characteristics impact the independence of their decision making regarding saving and borrowing. An earlier study by Davutyan and Ozturkkal (2016) reports saving and borrowing decisions strongly correlate with income, education, marital status and region within country. Furthermore, 54% of those surveyed did not save and the main motivation for those who saved was to finance children’s education or home purchase. Religious people and those with a conservative lifestyle are less likely to borrow from family and friends. Older, married and working individuals are more likely to have difficulty paying back loans. According to the results of this survey, religious individuals are less likely to independently decide on their investment choices. Real time implementation of operational problems makes necessary the use of high speed computational methods while requiring reasonable accuracies. On the other hand, accuracy of the results and the speed of calculation depend on branch outage modeling as well as solution algorithm used. This paper presents a comparison of post outage bus voltage magnitudes calculated by two meta-heuristic approaches; namely differential evolution (DE) and harmony search (HS) methods. Specifically, the chapter will provide details about three concepts: lobbying, nation brands, and commercial diplomacy. The research objective is to propose a conceptual framework that (i) explains when and how a specific tool should be used and (ii) demonstrates the inherent connection between the tools. The main assumption in this research is that communication is an essential aspect of conducting international businesses. There are two different categories at the center of these communication attempts. First, MNCs address politicians and other key decision-makers within the local political systems in order to start their businesses. Second, local populations should be persuaded to consume their goods and services. The focus in this chapter is the interplay between the three communication tools that are used to address these two audiences.
