Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 3Perceived Happiness, Perceived Trust and Perceived Income Levels: the Case of the Reunified Germany(Savez Ekonomista Vojvodine, 2019) Ucal, Meltem Şengün; Günay, SimgeThis study explored the possible impact of perceived income on individual (perceived) happiness in Eastern and Western Germany in relation to perceived trust and four socio-economic variables, namely gender, age, marital status and employment status. To examine the relationship between these variables, a generalized ordered logit model was applied using the World Values Survey data. Bootstrapping and marginal effects were used to obtain a more robust model. The findings provided insights regarding the impact of perceived income and perceived trust on individual (perceived) happiness in both regions after reunification. Perceived income had a positive effect on all happiness categories in both regions. Perceived trust had a stronger positive impact on individual happiness than that of perceived income, although its significance varied across individual (perceived) happiness categories. Analysis of marginal effects revealed differences between the base models.Book Review Rise of Think-Tanks: Foreign Policy and National Security Cultures in Turkey(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2012) Çelik, Nihat[Abstract Not Available]Book Review Foreign Policy Under Austerity: Greece's Return To Normality?(Routledge Journals Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2018) Ifantis, Kostas[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 15Sabotage in Team Contests(Springer, 2019) Dogan, Serhat; Keskin, Kerim; Saglam, CagriIn the contest literature sabotage is defined as a deliberate and costly activity that damages the opponent's likelihood of winning the contest. Most of the existing results suggest that anticipating a possible sabotage contestants would be discouraged from exerting high efforts. In this paper we investigate the act of sabotage in a team contest wherein team members exert costly efforts as a contribution to their team's aggregate effort which in turn determines the contest's outcome. For the baseline model with no sabotage there exists a corner equilibrium implying a free-rider problem in each team. As for the model with sabotage our characterization of Nash equilibrium reveals two important results: (i) a unique interior equilibrium exists so that the free-rider problem no longer is a concern and (ii) the discouragement effect of sabotage vanishes for some players. On top of those conclusions we investigate the team owner's problems of prize allocation and team formation with the objective being to maximize his team's winning probability.Article Citation - WoS: 7Feminists' Dilemma-With or Without the State? Violence Against Women and Women's Shelters in Turkey(Ewha Womans Univ Press, 2011) Toktaş, Şule; Diner, ÇağlaThis article aims to describe the achievements of the women's movement in the struggle against domestic violence in Turkey and the points of contention between the state and feminists regarding this issue. Our goal in analyzing the Turkish case of violence against women is to reflect on how women's organizations work with the state; what they demand from it; and how they respond to the complex situations and dilemmas of state funded women's shelters. The article is based on field research; we used techniques of participant observation at annual congresses organized by women's organizations specialized in fighting violence against women and in-depth interviews with feminist activists, volunteers and social workers at women's shelters. It describes the experiences of feminists in Turkey, who are in the position of receiving support from and working closely with the state in running women's shelters.Editorial Citation - WoS: 3Roundtable Discussion on Homegrown Theorizing(Center Foreign Policy & Peace Research, 2018) Aydinli, Ersel; Aydın, Mustafa; Baran, Emre; Makarychev, Andrey; Smith, Karen; Gozen, Ramazan; Ipek, Pinar; Kuru, Deniz; Ozdemir, Haluk; Shih, Chih-Yu; Mallavarapu, Siddharth; Chen, Ching-Chang; Kostem, Seckin; Ersoy, Eyup; Jorgensen, Knud Erik; Esen, Berk[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 5Revisiting the Britain-Us Triangle During the Transition From Pax Britannica To Pax Americana (1947-1957)(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francıs Ltd, 2020) Barlas, Dilek; Yılmaz, Şuhnaz; Güvenç, SerhatThis article analyses the triangular relations between Britain, the United States and Turkey in the volatile Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean region at the advent of the Cold War. It examines the political, economic and military strategies that enabled Turkey to adapt to the transitional period from the Pax Britannica to the Pax Americana (1947-1957) in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. By focusing on this turbulent decade extending from the Truman Doctrine (1947) to the Eisenhower Doctrine (1957), this study posits that the transition from the waning influence of Britain to the coalitional hegemony of the United States was protracted and multi-layered. In this context, Turkey had to walk a diplomatic tightrope while managing certain aspects of continuity and change in a volatile region.Book Review The European Union's Immigration Policy: Managing Migration in Turkey and Morocco(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2018) Oral, GulMigration has been an important reason for externalization of the EU’s policies towards non- member third countries. NATO leaders recognize that the disruption of the flow of vital resources could affect Alliance security interests. There is no agreement on the definition of energy security in NATO as it differs based on each country's needs ; however there is a paragraph in the NATO concept from 2010 that states the importance of energy security and in 2012 there was further agreement that NATO wants to be involved in energy security and energy efficiency of military forces. This article is focused on the issue and analyses the importance and the meaning of energy security for NATO in the light of NATO summit declarations and the various NATO's strategic concepts.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Who Wants Left-Wing Policies? Economic Preferences and Political Cleavages in Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2020) Yagcı, Alper H.; Harma, Mehmet; Tekgüç, HasanWe administer a survey of economic policy preferences to a representative sample of the Turkish voting-age population. We show that policy preferences are distributed in non-linear ways that are at odds with what could be expected from a conventional left-right division. We find that while objective socioeconomic differences are bad at predicting economic policy preferences, the latter are distinctly associated with politically salient cleavages built on religiosity and ethnicity. We also examine how preferences of each party's voters compare with party programmes. Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 11Russian and Turkish Foreign Policy Activism in the Syrian Theater(International Relations Council of Turkey, 2019) Rüma, İnan; Çelikpala, MitatRussia and Turkey have been involved in remarkable redefinitions of their foreign policies while navigating through turbulent times in the Post-Cold War era. This has manifested in a search of being recognized as a great power. The tragic civil war in Syria has been the theatre of these ambitions of these two states in highly controversial ways. They have been on the opposite sides until recently on the essential question of the regime change in that country. The risk of a direct fight has even been observed when Turkish air force got a Russian jet down. However, a rapid rapprochement started due to Turkish priority shift from the regime change to the prevention of Kurdish autonomy and the alienation from US; and Russian enthusiasm to get the cooperation of an ardent anti-regime NATO member like Turkey. It can be said that Russia and Turkey have been more process-oriented than result-oriented because they have been compelled to see the limits of their power and influence. As a result, they seem to prefer to focus on the process since they seem to reach their primary objective of showing their salience. All in all, one can only hope for a peaceful and democratic life for Syrians whom tremendously suffered also as a result of an imbroglio of all these global and regional powers’ policies.Article Citation - WoS: 1Nato's Emerging Threat Perception: Cyber Security in the 21st Century(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2014) Bıçakcı, SalihWestphalian state system has been deeply affected from the civilianization of the cyber space. It is possible to see the traces of nuclear war and its competition in this new post-Cold War period. The contemporary threats against the cyber space and their vague boundaries could clearly be seen in the examples. Cyber attacks in this new security environment towards long lasting alliance NATO and its members are giving important clues for the future. In this article one discussed defensive measures of NATO for these new threats and the process which determined the cyber security strategies. Upon this cyber defense strategy NATO tries to level the cyber capabilities of its members and takes the necessary steps to achieve this goal. The Lisbon summit endorsed the preparation of a new strategy that includes cyber defense and protection of the critical information infrastructure.Article Citation - WoS: 1Turkey and the Caucasus: Transition From Reactive Foreign Policy To Proactive Rhythmic Diplomacy(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2010) Çelikpala, MitatThe consequences of the August 2008 Russian-Georgian War have deeply influenced not only the Caucasus but overall global stability as well. Turkey as a regional actor which claims to follow active diplomacy in her region has also been directly affected. Currently Turkey has positioned itself as a regional actor with a 'new' political perspective and has responded to developments in order to give the events shape and to ensure stability in the region. This attitude has caused controversies. The Caucasus became an interesting example to monitor Turkish foreign policy implementations with mottos such as 'zero problems with neighbors' problem-solving country' and 'rhythmic diplomacy' Turkey's policies and reactions to developments taking place in the Caucasus will help us to analyze and understand foreign policy objectives policy-making processes and the overall course of Turkish foreign policy This study makes a comprehensive assessment of Turkey's foreign policy in the Caucasus before and after August 2008.Article Citation - WoS: 13Citation - Scopus: 17A Multidimensional Investigation of Pretend Play and Language Competence: Concurrent and Longitudinal Relations in Preschoolers(Elsevier, 2020) Kızıldere, Erim; Aktan Erciyes, Aslı; Tahiroğlu, Deniz; Göksun, TilbePlay is an important tool for children's social interactions and cognitive skills. The current study examines the links between pretend play and language in 119 Turkish preschoolers at two time points tested one-year apart (Time 1 M-age = 45.82 months and Time 2 M-age = 57.68 months). Preschoolers' language competence (linguistic complexity and receptive vocabulary) was assessed along with several pretend play measures (telephone task, imaginary pantomime task, pretense score from a free play session). Results showed that concurrently the telephone and imaginary pantomime task scores were associated with linguistic complexity at Time 1 and only the telephone score was related to linguistic complexity at Time 2. No concurrent associations were found between receptive vocabulary and pretend play measures. Furthermore, a longitudinal relation was found between language competence and one pretend play measure: Time 1 telephone score predicted Time 2 receptive vocabulary score. These findings are discussed in terms of the two domains potentially sharing the symbolic aspect as an underlying mechanism and social aspect through pretense creating contexts relevant to language development.Other Dış Siyaseti ve Askerî Stratejileriyle İkinci Dünya Savaşı Türkiye Si İlhan Tekeli ve Selim İlkin 1. In addition to Turkey's willingness to open up to the region recent international developments such as the discovery of hydrocarbons off the coast of Israel Egypt and Cyprus the outbreak of the Arab Spring and changes in the regional balance of power have provided momentum for Turkey's engagement with the region. This paper argues that although these factors have provided space for Turkey to play a more assertive role in the region the country has thus far failed to present a successful region-wide strategy or carve up an influence zone.Article Citation - WoS: 8Computational International Relations What Can Programming, Coding and Internet Research Do for the Discipline?(Dış Politika ve Barış Araştırmaları Merkezi, İhsan Doğramacı Barış Vakfı, 2019) Ünver, Hamid AkınComputational Social Science emerged as a highly technical and popular discipline in the last few years, owing to the substantial advances in communication technology and daily production of vast quantities of personal data. As per capita data production significantly increased in the last decade, both in terms of its size (bytes) as well as its detail (heartrate monitors, internet-connected appliances, smartphones), social scientists’ ability to extract meaningful social, political and demographic information from digital data also increased. A vast methodological gap exists in ‘computational international relations’, which refers to the use of one or a combination of tools such as data mining, natural language processing, automated text analysis, web scraping, geospatial analysis and machine learning to provide larger and better organized data to test more advanced theories of IR. After providing an overview of the potentials of computational IR and how an IR scholar can establish technical proficiency in computer science (such as starting with Python, R, QGis, ArcGis or Github), this paper will focus on some of the author’s works in providing an idea for IR students on how to think about computational IR. The paper argues that computational methods transcend the methodological schism between qualitative and quantitative approaches and form a solid foundation in building truly multi-method research design.
