Acoustic Design Guidelines for Adults With Intellectual Disability

This paper concentrates on the acoustic design aspects of the living rooms in institutions for adults with intellectually disability. In the living rooms for adults with ID there is even a higher stress on the acoustics since they are more dependent on the acoustical environment compared to normal population. Moreover prevalence of hearing impairment among adults with ID is around 30% and in most cases it is not even recognised. Therefore the rooms for adults with ID need to be designed by taking into account the requirements of the hearing impaired. They need more favourable room acoustics to improve their communication and participation. This paper investigates three main themes: 1) Investigation of impact of building design tools on acoustical quality parameters and determination of most appropriate acoustical quality indicator that translates best into architectural practice for living rooms for adults with ID. 2) Investigation of the relation between user satisfaction and absorption amount in rooms for adults with ID by listening tests prepared from auralizations. 3) Development of architectural/acoustical design guidelines to provide optimal absorption amount for living rooms for adults with ID.
Ecological Strategies for Designing Halys River: a Landscape of Flux

Natural and manmade disasters led to the emergence of new approaches in designing our environment in the postindustrial era. Modern technological infrastructures failure to respond to the challenges from environmental hazards led the designers to restructure the landscape. This in turn, led to a shift in landscape architecture, planning and architecture discipline. In the past decade green infrastructure has been a topic for debate among practitioners and theorists across different disciplines, ranging from architecture, urban planning, engineering to geography and biology. The discourse appears to be an operational and promising tool in planning, designing resilient eco-system based infrastructures. This paper discusses an interdisciplinary design proposal for Sivas, Halys River in a landscape urbanistic manner. The aim of the project was to create a cultural and ecological corridor in Sivas, Turkey that is adaptable to changes and dynamics over time, considerate to ecosystem and human conditions. In the light of discourse of green infrastructure the paper derives adaptive design strategies for ecological urbanism.

Filling an Urban Void as a ‘public Interior’ in Balıkesir; Contemporary Intervention Into Historic Context Through Interior Space

The paper argues the role of interior spaces in linking with the urban open space configuration. The interior space is discussed as extensions of urban spaces and urban spaces as extensions of interiors with specific reference to a case study selected in Balıkesir urban fabric. Under the light shed by these discussions, the paper questions the certainty of boundries between exterior and interior, thus between interior design and architecture. While the first axis of discussion focuses on the duality between interior and exterior, the second axis of discussion concentrates on the insertion of new and contemporary architectural and spatial features into an existing and historic context. The Museum and Library of Photography project in Balıkesir, which is selected as case study, is based on a VOID connecting what exists with what disappeared long ago in a totally new combination. Consequently, paper shows that architectural identity of the existing (and sometimes disappeared) heritage is reproduced via injection of this new hybrid (interior-exterior) into the very heart of the existing urban fabric. The hybrid design of the VOID intends to resolve the tensions between the contrasting features of restoration and intervention merely by understanding the conditions and fundementals of the process of historical layering in the town.

Haydarpasa-Gebze Railway as a Heritage of Landscape Infrastructure

The modernisation of the suburban railway on the Asian side of Istanbul is part of the ongoing Marmaray Project. The 44.2 km commuter line, composed of twenty-seven stations was opened in 1872, during the period of Ottoman Sultan Abdulaziz. For the Ottomans the railway played a major role in the metamorphosis of the city/country. The establishment of railways marked a new era in the urban life of Ottoman towns and cities. The railway stations manifested modernisation, built to promote European architectural designs and became an integral part of urban social life. After the establishment of the Turkish Republic and the State Railways Company, the commuter line remained a key part of national policy and was seen as a manifestation of the young republic. The Marmaray Project aims to upgrade and join Asian and European suburban railway through a tunnel already built under the Bosporus. The work includes the demolition of old, original railway structures which are part of the architectural heritage of the historic railway network; also means the loss of an ecological green corridor. The research mainly discusses the need for preservation of the railway heritage, addressing its social and ecological benefits for the metropolitan city.
London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games-Acoustic Design Aspects of Temporary Venues

This paper concentrates on the acoustic design aspects of the Temporary Venues at London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The project needed integration of individuals from various different client groups consultants and contractors into one team to work in a multi-disciplinary way. Atkins-Acoustics Noise and Vibration Consultancy worked with venue design team project managers sustainability consultants from London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and architects. The keywords for Temporary Venues are absence of legacy and sustainability. There are over 120 of Temporary Venues spread throughout London and other parts of UK. The acoustic analysis strategy had two main components: Noise to the environment and noise to the venue. Noise to the environment included baseline noise survey of the site in comparison to the 3D modelling of the venue for construction games and demolition phases. Noise to the venue included setting acoustic criteria for each component sound insulation reverberation time calculations public address and voice evacuation design and mechanical plant noise control.

The Making of the 'new Woman': Narratives in the Popular Illustrated Press From the Ottoman Empire To the New Republic (1890-1920s)

The genre of social narrative was prominent in the printed press of the Ottoman Empire to the early Republic of Turkey (1850s-1920s). The ideological narratives disseminated through the periodical press were influential in the establishment of a new, changing society and social space. Starting in the second half of the nineteenth century, both male and female writers debated the position of women within the changing public setting. Various articles by various authors with various aims constructed multiple imaginations of the 'new woman' by the 1930s. The shifting concepts of womanhood entered the public debate with articles on the modern woman versus the women of the past and discussions on what makes a modern woman. Articles in newspapers and political magazines of the era debated the equality of the new woman in the public sphere. In contrast to them, popular almanacs brought the discussion of womanhood into the domestic space. Turkish-language almanacs contained effectual narratives of the culture of domesticity that helped to imagine and establish multiple modes of new womanhood interwoven with the notion of the home. This article attempts to trace the ideas of the "new woman" and the culture of domesticity that were used particularly in the illustrations found in three different Turkish-language almanacs specifically aimed at female readers in the 1920s, by discussing them as visual narratives.
Metamorphic Leaves

This article introduces an algorithm influenced by Goethe's concept of metamorphosis capable of generating a wide range of parametric leaf forms. Metamorphosis is defined as alternating stages of expansion and contraction that are observable during the development of flowering plants. This principle is extended toward leaf morphology, where two main developmental trajectories are outlined. By formulating simple two-dimensional geometric rules, the author tests the concept of metamorphosis on parametric leaf forms.
Post Occupancy Evaluation of a Transformed Design Studio

The decision-makers choices regarding the design and construction of educational spaces have a direct impact on the academic culture. With regard to the design studios, the physical conditions of the studio spaces specifically act as the main element that creates the studio culture. The present study aims at understanding the relationship between the spatial transformation and the expectations of the students. Following a post occupancy approach, we asked, “What can we learn from collection of individual evaluations of students’ on transformed studio environment?” and “Where does this knowledge fit in the readily available literature on built environment and learning spaces?” Twenty-five students are asked to write texts on their expectations related to a transformed studio in which they were receiving education at the time of the study. The texts are first examined for the frequency of the words used via cloud analysis. Following that analysis, two independent evaluators identified the phenomena in the texts and conducted a content analysis. The student expectations are classified into two main groups: Learning Experiences and Spatial Experiences. Learning experience involves three subgroups namely variation in work practices, creativity and social interactions and spatial experience is made up of physical comfort and furniture subgroups. Although during the spatial transformation, some improvement have been made, they did not completely fulfill the students’ expectations. The present study proposes that in such spatial transformations, it would be possible to attain user satisfaction when decision-makers follow participatory processes in which all groups that would be effected can participate.

A Serbian Princess in Ottoman Palace: Mileva Olivera Lazarevic

Born as the daughter of the serbian Knez Lazar taken into the Ottoman palace marrying Bayezid I (The Thunderbolt) who gave her father's execution order became the slave of Timur (Tamerlane) after the Battle of Ankara and when set free turning back to her country Olivera had a life full of trauma and tragedies resembling a romantic adventure According to the serbian she was a hero who sacrificed herself for her country according to the Ottomans she was a bad woman who adapted Bayezid to alcohol and entertainment according to European orientalist myths she was a princess who was despised by barbarians to whom was taken captive. This study aims to reveal the image of Olivera reflected in the works of contemporary Ottoman Byzantine Serbian Timurid and European sources narratives and arts with a focus on the life story of Olivera who although was essentially a member of the Ottoman dynasty did not have any monographs about her in Turkey.
