Article Citation Count: 31Acculturation Attitudes and Social Adjustment in British South Asian Children: A Longitudinal Study(Sage Publications Inc, 2013) Baysu, Gülseli; Baysu, Gülseli; Cameron, Lindsey; Nigbur, Dennis; Rutland, Adam; Watters, Charles; Hossain, Rosa; LeTouze, Dominique; Landau, AnickA 1-year longitudinal study with three testing points was conducted with 215 British Asian children aged 5 to 11 years to test hypotheses from Berry's acculturation framework. Using age-appropriate measures of acculturation attitudes and psychosocial outcomes it was found that (a) children generally favored an integrationist attitude and this was more pronounced among older (8-10 years) than in younger (5-7 years) children and (b) temporal changes in social self-esteem and peer acceptance were associated with different acculturation attitudes held initially as shown by latent growth curve analyses. However a supplementary time-lagged regression analysis revealed that children's earlier integrationist attitudes may be associated with more emotional symptoms (based on teachers' ratings) 6 months later. The implications of these different outcomes of children's acculturation attitudes are discussed.Article Citation Count: 3Activist communication design on social media: The case of online solidarity against forced Islamic lifestyle(Sage Publications, 2021) Güney, Talat Balca Arda; Akdemir, AyşegülThis article explores the relationship between connective and collective group identity through the example of “You Won’t Walk Alone,” a social media platform of solidarity for women suffering from the pressures of Islamic dress code in Turkey. While Turkey has a long history of conservative women’s initiatives against secular institutional code and of secular women against Islamic and misogynist social reactions, the social media platform You Won’t Walk Alone (Yalnız Yürümeyeceksin) illustrates a striking self-reflexivity of women mobilizing against their very own conservative communities. The research is based on multimodal content analysis of the posts including both images and texts in order to grasp to what extent social media offers a genuine public space for anonymous participants of the online platform as opposed to digitally networked movements which primarily reflect personalized agency. We analyze how connective and collective group identity can be correlated in this case in which online participants build solidarity by sharing content anonymously. Hence, this article questions the ways in which activist design of communication affects and shapes activism through this case study.Article Citation Count: 13Adoption of Mobile Health Apps in Dietetic Practice: Case Study of Diyetkolik(Jmır Publıcatıons, Inc, 130 Queens Quay E, 2020) Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Akdur, GizdemBackground: Dietetics mobile health apps provide lifestyle tracking and support on demand. Mobile health has become a new trend for health service providers through which they have been shifting their services from clinical consultations to online apps. These apps usually offer basic features at no cost and charge a premium for advanced features. Although diet apps are now more common and have a larger user base, in general, there is a gap in literature addressing why users intend to use diet apps. We used Diyetkolik, Turkey's most widely used online dietetics platform for 7 years, as a case study to understand the behavioral intentions of users. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors that influence the behavioral intentions of users to adopt and use mobile health apps. We used the Technology Acceptance Model and extended it by exploring other factors such as price-value, perceived risk, and trust factors in order to assess the technology acceptance of users. Methods: We conducted quantitative research on the Diyetkolik app users by using random sampling. Valid data samples gathered from 658 app users were analyzed statistically by applying structural equation modeling. Results: Statistical findings suggested that perceived usefulness (P<.001), perceived ease of use (P<.001), trust (P<.001), and price-value (P<.001) had significant relationships with behavioral intention to use. However, no relationship between perceived risk and behavioral intention was found (P=.99). Additionally, there was no statistical significance for age (P=.09), gender (P=.98), or previous app use experience (P=.14) on the intention to use the app. Conclusions: This research is an invaluable addition to Technology Acceptance Model literature. The results indicated that 2 external factors (trust and price-value) in addition to Technology Acceptance Model factors showed statistical relevance with behavioral intention to use and improved our understanding of user acceptance of a mobile health app. The third external factor (perceived risk) did not show any statistical relevance regarding behavioral intention to use. Most users of the Diyetkolik dietetics app were hesitant in purchasing dietitian services online. Users should be frequently reassured about the security of the platform and the authenticity of the platform's dietitians to ensure that users' interactions with the dietitians are based on trust for the platform and the brand.Book Review Citation Count: 0The American Passport in Turkey: national citizenship in the age of transnationalism(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francıs Ltd, 2020) Yanardağoğlu, Eylem[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation Count: 24Antecedents and performance outcomes of value-based selling in sales teams: a multilevel, systems theory of motivation perspective(Springer, 2020) Mengüç, Bülent; Mengüç, Bülent; Panagopoulos, Nikolaos G.Firms are increasingly deploying a value-based selling (VBS) approach in their sales organizations to drive growth for new offerings. However, VBS adoption remains challenging, signaling that leaders need guidance to motivate VBS. Drawing from the systems theory of motivation, we examine motivational mechanisms at two levels-salesperson and sales team-to understand how to motivate, and benefit from, VBS. Using multisource data (i.e., salespeople, managers, archival performance) from 70 sales teams in a U.S.-based manufacturing and services provider, our findings illustrate drivers and outcomes of VBS. Specifically, we uncover a framework of salesperson, leader, customer, and team factors that help explain salesperson motivation for VBS. Importantly, we link VBS to customers' adoption of new products to support VBS's role for selling new products. Critical for sales team strategy, our model also integrates a team-level motivational mechanism to provide a comprehensive framework for salesperson and sales team motivations and outcomes.Article Citation Count: 52Assessing the importance of international tourism for the Turkish economy: a social accounting matrix analysis(Elsevier Science, 2012) Akkemik, Küçük Ali; Akkemik, K. AliThe international tourism sector has grown rapidly in Turkey since the 1980s and Turkey ranks among the top ten countries in terms of tourist arrivals and receipts. Previous studies on international tourism in Turkey are partial equilibrium studies which emphasized the importance of the sector for foreign exchange earnings employment creation and economic growth. The social accounting matrix (SAM) modeling approach is superior to partial equilibrium analysis as it takes into account intersectoral linkages. This paper analyzes the contribution of international tourism to the Turkish economy using two SAMs for 1996 and 2002 respectively. Two analyses are conducted using the SAM impact model: (i) sectoral comparison of GDP elasticities and (ii) SAM impact analysis of international tourism on output value-added and employment. The results show that the GDP elasticity of international tourism is relatively low and the impact of foreign tourist expenditures on domestic production value-added (GDP) and employment in Turkey are modest. The results imply the possibility of leakage of foreign tourist expenditures out of the economy. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. This paper aims to estimate 2D mineral map and its associated liberation spectrum of a particular chromite sample from optical micrographs by using Random Forest Classification a powerful machine-learning algorithm implemented on a user-friendly and an open-source software. This supervised classification method can be used to accurately generate 2D mineral map of this chromite sample. The variation of the measured spectra with the sample size is studied showing that images of 200 particles randomly selected from the optical micrographs are sufficient to reproduce liberation spectrum of this sample. In addition the 2D spectrum obtained with this classification method is compared with the one obtained from the Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). Although 2D mineralogical compositions obtained by the two methods are quite similar microscopic analysis estimates poorer liberation than MLA due to the residual noise (misclassified gangue) generated by the classification. Nevertheless we cannot compare the reliabilities of the two methods as there is not a standard produce yet to quantify the accuracy of MLA analysis. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. First we analyzed the lignite production and overburden removal activities of TKI from a historical perspective and then employed the Principle Component Analysis to build a mining efficiency index of TKI and investigated its historical development since the establishment of the company. We found that labor productivity and operational structure have been the most important factors positively affecting the index. The current article makes two important contributions: (1) by using the most comprehensive data set available on TKI for the first time and (2) by developing a Mining Efficiency Index (MEI) which can be used to analyze productivity in lignite mining activities in different countries. Hence assortment planning is an important task for sustained financial success of a retailer in a competitive business environment. In this study we consider the assortment planning problem of a retailer in Turkey. Using empirical point-of-sale data a demand model is developed and utilized in the optimization model. Due to nonlinear nature of the model and integrality constraint we find that it is difficult to obtain a solution even for moderately large product sets. We propose a greedy heuristic approach that generates better results than the mixed integer nonlinear programming in a reasonably shorter period of time for medium and large problem sizes. We also proved that our method has a worst-case time complexity of O(n 2 )while other two well-known heuristics’ complexities are O(n 3 )and O(n 4 ). Also numerical experiments reveal that our method has a better performance than the worst-case as it generates better results in a much shorter run-times compared to other methods. © 2019 Elsevier LtdArticle Citation Count: 0Babbling through social media: A cross-country study mapping out social networks using eWOM intentions(Springer, 2023) Kıygı Çallı, Meltem; Kıygı-Çallı, Meltem; El Oraiby, MaryamThis research aims to determine the factors affecting the users’ electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) seeking and sharing intentions and to reveal the interactions among and within clusters using social network analysis (SNA). This study includes three hierarchical sub-studies conducted in two countries, Turkey and Poland. First, we develop a segmentation for social networking site (SNS) users based on the frequency of sharing product-related information on SNSs. Second, we investigate the impact of several factors that affect eWOM seeking and sharing intentions using regression analysis. In the second sub-study, we also include the identified segments developed in the first sub-study as another factor that may have differentiated eWOM intentions. Third, to understand the degree of interaction among SNS users, we apply an SNA using the forecasted eWOM intentions scores from the second sub-study, which gives us hypothetical social networks. The results of SNA present strong interactions inter- and intra-clusters in both countries. Some key findings include the identification of three SNS user segments, including “Middlers,” that may be of particular interest to brands. We also find that in terms of eWOM intentions, users in Turkey are more active than in Poland. Although some predictors of eWOM seeking and sharing intentions differ between the two countries, users intend to be more active in eWOM seeking than in eWOM sharing. The comparative study provides valuable insights for decision-makers to engage different market segments via SNSs with various proposed features using suggested information contents for selected product categories.Article Citation Count: 29Bank credit in uncertain times: Islamic vs. conventional banks(Elsevier Ltd, 2020) Öztürk Danışman, Gamze; Danışman, Gamze Öztürk; Demir, Ender; Tarazi, AmineThis paper explores whether the impact of economic uncertainty on credit growth differs for Islamic vs. conventional banks. Using a sample of 416 banks (58 Islamic and 358 conventional) in 12 countries, the findings indicate that an increase in economic uncertainty significantly decreases the credit growth of conventional banks but does not have any significant impact on Islamic banks’ credit growth. Our results are robust to alternative specifications and addressing endogeneity concerns using GMM estimators. We further observe that our findings are stronger for the following countries: (1) countries with explicit deposit insurance protection system for Islamic banks, (2) lower foreign dominance, and (3) countries with a higher share of deposits and assets in Islamic banks.Article Citation Count: 54BEAMS: backbone extraction and merge strategy for the global many-to-many alignment of multiple PPI networks(Oxford University Press, 2014) Erten, Cesim; Erten, CesimMotivation: Global many-to-many alignment of biological networks has been a central problem in comparative biological network studies. Given a set of biological interaction networks the informal goal is to group together related nodes. For the case of protein-protein interaction networks such groups are expected to form clusters of functionally orthologous proteins. Construction of such clusters for networks from different species may prove useful in determining evolutionary relationships in predicting the functions of proteins with unknown functions and in verifying those with estimated functions. Results: A central informal objective in constructing clusters of orthologous proteins is to guarantee that each cluster is composed of members with high homological similarity usually determined via sequence similarities and that the interactions of the proteins involved in the same cluster are conserved across the input networks. We provide a formal definition of the global many-to-many alignment of multiple protein-protein interaction networks that captures this informal objective. We show the computational intractability of the suggested definition. We provide a heuristic method based on backbone extraction and merge strategy (BEAMS) for the problem. We finally show through experiments based on biological significance tests that the proposed BEAMS algorithm performs better than the state-of-the-art approaches. Furthermore the computational burden of the BEAMS algorithm in terms of execution speed and memory requirements is more reasonable than the competing algorithms.Article Citation Count: 7Being seen - Headscarves and the contestation of public space in Turkey(Sage Publications Ltd, 2008) Louıse Şimşek, Mary[Abstract Not Available]Conference Object Citation Count: 0Beliefs of Donors About Liver Failure and Transplantation Surgery(Elsevier France-Editions Scientifiques Medicales Elsevier, 2015) Krespi, Margörit Rita; Tankurt, A.; Acarlı, Koray; Kalayoğlu, Murat; Kanmaz, Turan[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation Count: 5Beyond a Paycheck: The Influence of Workforce Participation on Women's Cancer Screening in Turkey(Springer/Plenum Publishers, 2016) Tarcan Kumkale, Gökçe; Baruh, Lemi; Kumkale, Gökçe TarcanThe present study investigates the influence of workforce participation on women's cancer screening behaviors in Turkey. In cultures with predominantly Muslim populations like Turkey emphasis is typically placed on a woman's traditional role as a child bearer. Although the impact of workforce participation on women's welfare has been studied in various contexts the relationship between workforce participation and health protective behavior has received scant attention. Using quantitative data from a survey of women aged 40 and above from 33 urban cities in Turkey (N = 483) we examine the influence of workforce participation on breast and cervical cancer screening behaviors. Homemakers were less likely than working/retired women to be up-to-date on screenings. Women with lower income and education screened lessReview Citation Count: 11Bidding of price taker power generators in the deregulated Turkish power market(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2013) Yücekaya, Ahmet Deniz; Yücekaya, AhmetIn deregulated power markets power firms bid into the day-ahead power market either with buy offers or sell offers. The auction mechanism and competition determine the equilibrium price and quantity for each hour. If the bid price of a company is below the market clearing price then the offer of the company is accepted and rewarded with the market price. A company can be a price maker or price taker depending on the capacity it offers to the market. A price-taker unit must determine the right offer that will maximize their profit given price uncertainty and blind auction rules. This paper first examines power supply in the Turkish electricity market and bidding process. Then a marginal cost-based Monte Carlo method is developed to determine hourly and block bidding strategies of price taker units. Historical market prices are then implemented in a normal distribution to generate hourly price scenarios. A solution methodology is developed that maximizes the expected profit of each hourly and block bidding strategy over price scenarios. The generator is able to both evaluate the hourly bidding and block bidding strategies and find the best bidding strategy that will be submitted to the market using the proposed methodology. The model is illustrated for two coal units in Turkish power market and the results are presented. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Few studies have examined SHS exposure in waterpipe venues and their employees. Methods: We surveyed 276 employees of 46 waterpipe tobacco venues in Istanbul Moscow and Cairo. We interviewed venue managers and employees and collected biological samples from employees to measure exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) hair nicotine saliva cotinine urine cotinine urine 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) and urine 1-hydroxypyrene glucuronide (1-OHPG). We estimated adjusted geometric mean ratios (GMR) of each SHS biomarker by employee characteristics and indoor air SHS measures. Results: There were 73 nonsmoking employees and 203 current smokers of cigarettes or waterpipe. In nonsmokers the median (interquartile) range concentrations of SHS biomarkers were 1.1 (0.2 40.9) mu g/g creatinine urine cotinine 5.5 (2 15) ng/mL saliva cotinine 0.95 (0.36 5.02) ng/mg hair nicotine 1.48 (0.98 3.97) pg/mg creatinine urine NNAL 0.54 (0.25 0.97) pmol/mg creatinine urine 1-OHPG and 1.67 (1.33 2.33) ppm exhaled CO. An 8-hour increase in work hours was associated with higher urine cotinine (GMR: 1.68 95% CI: 1.20 2.37) and hair nicotine (GMR: 1.22 95% CI: 1.05 1.43). Lighting waterpipes was associated with higher saliva cotinine (GMR: 2.83 95% CI: 1.05 7.62). Conclusions: Nonsmoking employees of waterpipe tobacco venues were exposed to high levels of SHS including measurable levels of carcinogenic biomarkers (tobacco-specific nitrosamines and PAHs).Article Citation Count: 11Bivariate Pseudo-Gompertz distribution and concomitants of its order statistics(Elsevier Science Bv, 2013) Gebizlioğlu, Ömer Lütfi; Gebizlioğlu, Ömer LütfiThis paper presents a new bivariate Pseudo-Gompertz distribution that sprouts from the classical Gompertz distribution and possesses the features of pseudo-distribution functions. In addition to some standard properties of the proposed distribution distributions of order statistics and their concomitants for samples drawn from the new distribution are obtained. The survival and hazard functions of the concomitants are shown and their values are tabled. Interpretations of the results are given in connection with risk events and risk management. With a large number of individuals crossing every day it is also a labour gate where irregular Georgian immigrants cross the border for work in Turkey. In general border policies are constructed and reconstructed in a dynamic process in which economic security ethnopolitical geopolitical and cultural paradigms interact. The aim of this paper is to observe the complementary and conflicting relationship and negotiation process between economic and security paradigms in particular with a focus on the perceptions of the officers of the border administration and state bureaucracy at the local level. To this end field research was carried out consisting of interviews with Turkish state officials responsible for immigration and border crossing in the Sarp gate region. The article sheds light on the interaction between various agencies actors and stakeholders in border policymaking at the regional level. It also elaborates on the profiles both of incoming immigrants employed as irregular workers and of deportees. The results of the qualitative study show that the dominance of the economic paradigm that underlies the main framework of Georgia-Turkey relations overrides security concerns between the two countries thus necessitating a more flexible implementation of laws. The field research illustrates that implementation of laws and regulations at the local level varies and while some groups of irregular immigrants are allowed to work others are not and what is more are deported.
