Turkey's Evolving Relations With the Kurdistan Regional Government (krg): From 2002 To 2011
(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2019) Çakır, Faruk; Trıantafyllou, Dımıtrıos; Triantaphyllou, Dimitrios
The aim of this thesis is to analyze Turkey’s evolving relations with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) under the Justice and Development Party (JDP) (2002 – 2011). In contrast to the security-oriented policy during the 1990s, Turkey has developed relations with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to the level of a ‘strategic partnership,' following the invasion of Iraq in 2003. In particular, the relations between the KRG and the Turkish government have increased rapidly politically, economically, and as well as in terms of security since late 2007. This thesis attempts to explain this evolving foreign policy behavior of Turkey towards the KRG from a theoretical perspective. It tries to examine these evolving relations between both two actors in terms of a combination of various events at international, regional and domestic level. Therefore, it uses a neoclassical realist framework to account for central dynamics and reasons behind the foreign policy conduct of Turkey towards the KRG, as neoclassical realism explains a state’s foreign policy behavior by looking at factors at systemic, regional and domestic levels. Thus, this study argues that the new systemic, regional and local conditions brought about by the post-2003 invasion of Iraq required Turkey to reassess its previous foreign policy approach towards the KRG.

The Assessment of Turkey as a Soft Power :2009-2014
(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2016) Oral, Gul; Trıantafyllou, Dımıtrıos; Triantaphyllou, Dimitrios
Soft power has been an influential concept in the field of international relations since it was developed by Joseph Jr. Nye in the 1990s. Even though the term was coined in order to assess American power in terms of its soft power resources such as values culture and policies it has been extensively used by politicians and scholars in different countries. The concept has also come into prominence in Turkey during the JDP period by highlighting a new foreign policy approach presented by Ahmet Davutoglu based on his Strategic Depth doctrine. Turkey has been evaluated as a rising soft power which can play an active role in the regional and global arena due to its various soft power resources such as its culture values foreign policy and economic success. The thesis aims at analyzing Turkey’s soft power between 2009-2014 when Davutoglu served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs by creating an analytical framework based on its soft power resources and practices. The main research question arises as: “whether Turkey has achieved to enhance its soft power during the 2009-2014 period as asserted?” The foremost argument of this study could be expressed as follows: though Turkey has had a substantial amount of soft power owing to its diverse resources its soft power seems to be diminishing due to its lack of success in promoting universal values in its domestic and foreign policy.
