In recent years, the rhetoric of pronatalism in Turkey has come to dominate and raises questions about the availability of reproductive health care services, in particular contraception, from state run facilities. This study aimed to determine the availability of dedicated emergency contraception (EC) from government run Family Health Centers (FHCs) in Turkey. In 2019, a team of trained researchers called a random sample of 583 FHCs located in the largest cities in twelve regions across Turkey asking for dedicated EC. Dedicated EC is largely unavailable from government supported FHCs. Only 6.1% stated that they provided EC while 53.8% stated that it was not available and that they could provide no alternative. A further 28.3% declared that they could provide an alternative to dedicated EC that almost always consisted of oral contraceptives. We found statistically significant variations in response rate and availability among cities as well as the rate of referral to pharmacies. Steady-state fluorescence (SSF) technique was employed for studying sol-gel transition and swelling of PAAm-kappa C composite gels which were prepared by free-radical crosslinking copolymerization. Pyranine was introduced as a fluorescence probe. Pyranine molecules start to bind to acrylamide polymer chains upon the initiation of the polymerization thus the spectra of the bonded pyranines shift to the shorter wavelengths. Fluorescence spectra from the bonded pyranines allow one to monitor the sol-gel transition and to test the universality of the sol-gel transition as a function of some kinetic parameters like polymer concentration. Observations around the gel point t (c) for PAAm-kappa C composite gels showed that the gel fraction exponent beta obeyed the percolation result for low kappa C (< 2.0 wt. %) however classical results were produced at higher kappa C (> 2.0 wt.%). On the other hand fluorescence intensity of pyranine was measured during in situ swelling process at various amounts of kappa C and it was observed that fluorescence intensity values decreased as swelling is proceeded. Despite this trend, effective interventions targeting vaccine-related conspiracy beliefs remain scarce, partly due to underexplored cognitive processes. Three competing theoretical accounts offer differing predictions about the role of reflective thinking in supporting conspiracy beliefs: the Motivated Reasoning Account suggests reflection strengthens commitment to pre-existing attitudes; the Reflective Reasoning Account posits that reflection enhances belief accuracy; and the Reflective Doubt Account proposes reflection fosters general scepticism. Main outcome measures: Utilising open science practices and a validated technique to activate reflection, we conducted an experimental investigation with a diverse sample (N = 1483) segmented by vaccine attitudes. We investigated the impact of reflection on specific and generic COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs and vaccine-support behaviours across pro-vaccine, neutral, and vaccine-hesitant groups, while examining the moderating effects of scientific literacy, intellectual humility, and actively open-minded thinking. Results: The confirmatory analysis provided no direct support for the theoretical predictions. However, findings indicated that intellectual humility significantly moderated the effect of reflection, enhancing vaccine-support behaviour among participants with high intellectual humility, highlighting the complex interplay of cognitive style and prior attitudes in shaping responses to conspiracy beliefs and vaccine-support actions. Applying game design elements can create an entertaining environment and increase user engagement. Using ubiquitous tools, like smartphones, to conduct haptics user studies could allow researchers to access larger participant groups while a gamified approach could facilitate the data collection by making the experiment more enjoyable. To explore this concept, this work presents a gamified version of an existing psychophysical experiment that investigates response time to multisensory cues using a smartphone based on "Whac-A-Mole". We conducted a user study to compare our gamified interface with an existing psychophysical interface with thirteen participants exploring the response time from eighteen combinations of auditory, haptic, and visual stimuli at different levels of intensities and participant preferences for both interfaces. The results demonstrate that the gamified interface successfully captured similar trends in response times and significantly elevated participant enjoyment ($p < 0.003$), but did not result in equivalent response times to the original interface. The structures of these compounds were characterized by spectral (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy H-1-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) C-13-NMR and high-resolution electron ionization mass spectrometry) methods. Furthermore molecular modeling of these compounds was studied on human methionine aminopeptidase-2. All synthesized compounds were screened for anticancer activity against three prostate cancer cell lines (PC3 DU-145 and LNCaP) using the 3-(45-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium colorimetric method. Compound 7a showed the best activity against the PC3 DU-145 and LNCaP cancer cell lines with IC50 values of 26.0 34.5 and 48.8 mu M respectively. Compounds 7b 7k and 7m showed anticancer activity against cancer cell lines PC3 and DU-145 with IC50 values of 43.0 36.5 29.3 mu M and 49.8 49.1 31.6 mu M respectively. Compounds 7f and 7g showed anticancer activity against PC3 cells with IC50 values of 43.4 and 34.5 mu M respectively. To assess the biodistribution in mice of IRDye800 dye-labeled compound 7a or 100 mu M of free dye was injected intravenously into the mice's tail. In vivo images were taken with in vivo imaging system spectrum device at 60 120 180 240 300 and 360 min after injection. At the end of 360 min ex vivo studies were carried out to determine in which organs the dye was accumulated in the urogenital system. To address this gap, we adapted into Polish the Autobiographical Recollection Test (ART), a self-report instrument originally designed to capture general autobiographical remembering across seven components: vividness, narrative coherence, reliving, rehearsal, scene construction, visual imagery, and life story relevance. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the factorial validity of the Polish version, demonstrating adequate psychometric properties. The Polish adaptation also showed expected correlations with another self-report measure of autobiographical memory ability (Survey of Autobiographical Memory, SAM), supporting its convergent validity. Furthermore, both the full and brief versions of ART showed significant associations with scores on the Involuntary Autobiographical Memory Inventory (IAMI). Disorders in these areas can lead to interpersonal, psychosocial, and legal problems for the individual and society. The likelihood of consequent aggression and crime makes them foci of forensic psychiatry over time. In this study, two developmental disorders that have a clear relationship with crime, that are antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), and psychopathy are investigated for their relationship with these social cognitive deficits. Methods: The present study involved 23 male prison inmates who were diagnosed with both antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy, as well as 23 control participants who were matched for age, gender, and level of education. Following the psychiatric interview, Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET), the Iowa Gambling Test (IGT), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS), Defense Styles Questionnaire (DSQ), Childhood Psychic Trauma Scale (CTQ), Hare Psychopathy Checklist (PCL-R) were administered to all participants. Results: The results of the study showed that ASPD group performed statistically worse than healthy controls in TAS, CTQ, all items of DSQ, PCL-R Factor 1 and 2, and all the IGT scores (p<0.05). There were no statistically significant difference between in the RMETtest performances Conclusion: These results suggest that ASPD and psychopathy lead to impaired decision-making behaviors due to the inability to recognize one's own emotions and impulsivity, and that these characteristics play a critical role in the criminal behavior of individuals. In addition, contrary to expectations, the results of affective theory of mind assessed with the RMET showed similar characteristics in homicide convicts and healthy controls. Self-licensing refers to the act of using justifications before gratifications and has been associated with higher snack consumption. Previous research has found that while functional self-licensing decreases unhealthy snack consumption, dysfunctional self-licensing increases the number of calories taken from unhealthy snacks. Building upon existing evidence, we addressed functional and dysfunctional self-licensing to investigate how self-licensing behaviors are associated with daily variables (i.e., stress and sleep) and unhealthy snacking habits. Participants (N = 124) were given a battery of measures at the start of the week and asked to send their snack consumption every night for a week via an online questionnaire, along with daily stress and sleep items. The data were analyzed with Hierarchical Linear Modelling. Neither selflicensing measures nor unhealthy snacking habits predicted unhealthy snack consumption. Daily stress was associated with lower unhealthy snack consumption. However, the interaction between daily stress and functional self-licensing was significant, suggesting that on stressful days functional self-licensers consume even fewer unhealthy snacks compared to less stressful days. Functional and dysfunctional self-licensing are rather new constructs which is why examining their effects is important for further research. However, in contrast to the existing evidence, we failed to find an effect of both types of self-licensing on snack consumption, suggesting the effect depends on potential contextual or individual-specific factors. Microtubule dynamics are characterized by dynamic instability-the ability of individual microtubules to switch between phases of growth and shrinkage. Dynamic instability can be explained by the GTP-cap model, suggesting that a "cap" of GTP-tubulin subunits at the growing microtubule end has a stabilizing effect, protecting against microtubule catastrophe-the switch from growth to shrinkage. Although the GTP-cap is thought to protect the growing microtubule end, whether the GTP-cap size affects microtubule stability in cells is not known. Notably, microtubule end-binding proteins, EBs, recognize the nucleotide state of tubulin and display comet-like localization at growing microtubule ends, which can be used as a proxy for the GTP-cap. Here, we employ high spatiotemporal resolution imaging to compare the relationship between EB comet size and microtubule dynamics in interphase LLC-PK1 cells to that measured in vitro. Our data reveal that the GTP-cap size in cells scales with the microtubule growth rate in the same way as in vitro. However, we find that microtubule ends in cells can withstand transition to catastrophe even after the EB comet is lost. A multiplicity of algebraic order is found in the phase diagram, in the form of renormalization-group fixed lines composed of a continuous sequence of interaction potential surfaces. In the Ashkin-Tellerized XY model, each site has two continuously varying spins, each spin being an XY spin, that is, having orientation continuously varying in 2π radians. Nearest-neighbor sites are coupled by two-spin and four-spin interactions. The phase diagram has algebraically ordered phases that are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic in each of the spins, and algebraically ordered phases that are ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic in the combined spin variable. These phases are subtended by fixed lines of potential surfaces that are multiplicatively different Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless fixed potentials. The evolution of continuously varying criticality is traced within each of the four phases. Activation of the complement system following transplantation may result in allograft rejection. Our study aimed to evaluate the potential relationship between factors affecting kidney transplant success and complement 5 (C5) using bioinformatic tools. Methods. GenCards and Genemania were used to provide the genetic functional information belonging to the C5 gene, and genomic browsers of STRING, UCSC, KEGG were used to reveal interactions with other genes and various pathways. MiRDB was used to specify the miRNAs that were associated with the C5 gene. The UniProt database was used to determine the tissues that expressed the C5 gene using protein-protein interactions. Results. In the bioinformatic analyses performed, high levels of C5 gene expression were found in the naiive kidney. Twenty-five genes were found to be strongly associated with C5. Fifty-four miRNAs targeting the C5 gene were specified. The C5 gene was found to be involved in biologic processes such as complement activation (FDR = 6.46e-22), complement binding (FDR = 2.20e-06), cytolysis (FDR = 4.82e-14), regulation of complement activation (FDR = 4.08e24), positive regulation of vascular endothelial growth factor production (FDR = 0.0430), regulation of macrophage chemotaxis (FDR = 0.0447), activation of the immune response (FDR = 1.26e13), leukocyte-mediated immunity (FDR = 1.41e-09), innate immune response (FDR = 3.05e-09), allograft rejection (FDR = 2.40e-12), oxidative injury response (FDR = 0.00016), and trigerring of the beginning of the complement cascade (FDR = 0.0244). Compliance however remains low in some hospitality venues. We identified characteristics associated with knowledge of health effects that can be prevented by the smoke-free law the attitude towards and enforcement of the law. Methods In 2014 we conducted 400 interviews with hospitality venue owners and employees in 7 cities in Turkey. The venues were identified based on a random sampling strategy in a previous phase of the study. Results Over one-third (37.3%) of hospitality owners and employees had adequate knowledge of the health effects from secondhand smoke (SHS) 71.3% had a positive attitude towards the law and 19.5% had personally enforced the law. Participants who worked 70 hours or more per week were more likely to have a positive attitude towards the law. Older individuals women participants working in bars/nightclubs venue owners receiving fines for non-compliance and current smokers were less likely to have a positive attitude towards the law. Participants working in traditional coffee houses former smokers and participants with a high school education or greater were more likely to enforce the law. Smokers who quit or reduced smoking because of the law were more likely to enforce the law compared with those who were not influenced by the law. Conclusions Although the attitude towards the law was positive interventions are needed to increase knowledge on the health effects of SHS and facilitate enforcement of the law particularly among subgroups less likely to have a positive attitude and enforce the law.Editorial Citation - WoS: 25New Modification in Otoplasty: Anterior Approach(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2001) Erol, O. OnurAfter harvesting the conchal cartilage in a large series of secondary rhinoplasties using the anterior approach there was a marked improvement in the shape of the auricle with unnoticeable scarring hidden under the convolution of the antihelix. In this series of 250 cases there were no hypertrophic scars or keloid formations. Based on these favorable results a new modification of otoplasty was developed using only the anterior approach. Between 1992 and 2000 108 otoplasties were performed on 55 patients to correct the prominent ear using only the anterior approach. All maneuvers used in modern otoplasty such as conchal reduction scaphal cartilage scoring and folding placement of horizontal mattress buried sutures conchal setback and the positioning of the tail and upper pole can be easily and effectively performed using only the anterior approach as described in this article. The use of an anterior approach does not disturb the neurovascular system of the ear because it is located on the ear's posterior side. Overall patient and physician satisfaction has continued to be very high during the 8 years that this technique has been used. Partly confirming role congruity theory, three-way interaction results from 665 participants demonstrated that among male participants with a stronger belief in traditional gender roles (compared to males with lower belief), the presence of the female inventor, either by herself or together with the male inventor, decreased the perceived efficacy and safety of the vaccine and reduced intentions to be vaccinated by the BioNTech vaccine. We did not observe such differences for women. While there is an agreement on the existence of a relationship between various favorable intermolecular interactions (e.g. Van der Waals electrostatic and desolvation forces) and the similarity of a conformation to its native structure the precise nature of this relationship is not known. Existing protein-protein docking methods typically formulate this relationship as a weighted sum of selected terms and calibrate their weights by using a training set to evaluate and rank candidate complexes. Despite improvements in the predictive power of recent docking methods producing a large number of false positives by even state-of-the-art methods often leads to failure in predicting the correct binding of many complexes. With the aid of machine learning methods we tested several approaches that not only rank candidate structures relative to each other but also predict how similar each candidate is to the native conformation. We trained a two-layer neural network a multilayer neural network and a network of Restricted Boltzmann Machines against extensive data sets of unbound complexes generated by RosettaDock and PyDock. We validated these methods with a set of refinement candidate structures. We were able to predict the root mean squared deviations (RMSDs) of protein complexes with a very small often less than 1.5 angstrom error margin when trained with structures that have RMSD values of up to 7 angstrom. In our most recent experiments with the protein samples having RMSD values up to 27 angstrom the average prediction error was still relatively small attesting to the potential of our approach in predicting the correct binding of protein-protein complexes.Article Solar Photovoltaic Development in West Africa Will Face Million-Ton Waste Challenges, and Off-Grid Systems Will Dominate(Amer Chemical Soc, 2025) Dong, Di; Emem, Onis; Liu, Litao; Sen, Burak; Rasmussen, Kasper; Edomah, Norbert; Liu, GangSolar photovoltaic (PV), especially off-grid systems, is a low-hanging fruit option among various renewable energy technology choices to address universal energy access, energy security, and climate challenges for vulnerable regions like West Africa. West Africa dominates in the uptake of solar PV solutions, while little attention has been paid to the potential PV waste generation. In this study, we developed a technology-specific, prospective material flow analysis model to investigate material stocks and flows of both on-grid and off-grid solar PV systems for 15 West African countries up to 2050. We show that the cumulative solar PV waste generation ranges from 2.3 to 7.8 million tons by 2050 in West Africa under different scenarios, around 70% of which comes from off-grid PV systems. The potential secondary materials supply ranges from 213 to 704 kilotons, which have potential economic value amounting to 143-475 million dollars or material equivalent to produce 6-19 GW of solar PV capacity. These results call for urgent policy attention, technology development, and infrastructure investment for future PV waste management and highlight the significance of addressing off-grid PV waste in Africa.
