Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 9Antifungal Screening and in Silico Mechanistic Studies of an In-House Azole Library(2019) Sarı, Suat; Özdemir, Serpil; Kart, Didem; Sabuncuoğlu, Suna; Doğan, İnci Selin; Özdemir, Zeynep; Bozbey, İrem; Gencel, Melis; Eşsiz, Şebnem; Reynisson, Jóhannes; Karakurt, Arzu; Saraç, Selma; Dalkara, Sevim; AdvertisingSystemic Candida infections pose a serious public health problem with high morbidity and mortality. C. albicans is the major pathogen identified in candidiasis; however, non-albicans Candida spp. with antifungal resistance are now more prevalent. Azoles are first-choice antifungal drugs for candidiasis; however, they are ineffective for certain infections caused by the resistant strains. Azoles block ergosterol synthesis by inhibiting fungal CYP51, which leads to disruption of fungal membrane permeability. In this study, we screened for antifungal activity of an in-house azole library of 65 compounds to identify hit matter followed by a molecular modeling study for their CYP51 inhibition mechanism. Antifungal susceptibility tests against standard Candida spp. including C. albicans revealed derivatives 12 and 13 as highly active. Furthermore, they showed potent antibiofilm activity as well as neglectable cytotoxicity in a mouse fibroblast assay. According to molecular docking studies, 12 and 13 have the necessary binding characteristics for effective inhibition of CYP51. Finally, molecular dynamics simulations of the C. albicans CYP51 (CACYP51) homology model's catalytic site complexed with 13 were stable demonstrating excellent binding.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 6Branch Outage Simulation Based Contingency Screening by Gravitational Search Algorithm(Praise Worthy Prize Srl, 2012) Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Özdemir, Aydoğan; Dağ, Hasan; Dağ, Hasan; Özdemir, Serpil; Advertising; Management Information SystemsPower systems contingency analysis is an important issue for electric power system operators. This paper performs branch outage simulation based contingency screening using a bounded network approach. Local constrained optimization problem representing the branch outage phenomena is solved by the gravitational search algorithm. The proposed method is applied to IEEE 14 30 57 and 118 Bus Test systems and its performance from the point of capturing violations is evaluated. In addition false alarms and the computational accuracy of the proposed method are also analyzed by using scattering diagrams. Finally the proposed gravitational search based contingency screening is compared with full AC load flow solutions from the point of computational speed. Real time implementation of operational problems makes necessary the use of high speed computational methods while requiring reasonable accuracies. On the other hand, accuracy of the results and the speed of calculation depend on branch outage modeling as well as solution algorithm used. This paper presents a comparison of post outage bus voltage magnitudes calculated by two meta-heuristic approaches; namely differential evolution (DE) and harmony search (HS) methods. The methods are tested on IEEE 14, IEEE 30, IEEE 57, and IEEE 118 bus test systems and the results are compared both in terms of accuracy and calculation speed.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Double Branch Outage Modeling and Simulation: Bounded Network Approach(Elsevier Science, 2015) Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Dağ, Hasan; Özdemir, Aydoğan; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Dağ, Hasan; Özdemir, Serpil; Advertising; Management Information SystemsEnergy management system operators perform regular outage simulations in order to ensure secure operation of power systems. AC power flow based outage simulations are not preferred because of insufficient computational speed. Hence several outage models and computational methods providing acceptable accuracy have been developed. On the other hand double branch outages are critical rare events which can result in cascading outages and system collapse. This paper presents a double branch outage model and formulation of the phenomena as a constrained optimization problem. Optimization problem is then solved by using differential evolution method and particle swarm optimization algorithm. The proposed algorithm is applied to IEEE test systems. Computational accuracies of differential evolution based solutions and particle swarm optimization based solutions are discussed for IEEE 30 Bus Test System and IEEE 118 Bus Test System applications. IEEE 14 Bus Test System IEEE 30 Bus Test System IEEE 57 Bus Test System IEEE 118 Bus Test System and IEEE 300 Bus Test System simulation results are compared to AC load flows in terms of computational speed. Finally the performance of the proposed method is analyzed for different outage configurations. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. By drawing on fields of production and consumption we turn to how both Turkey as a nation-brand and Orhan Pamuk as a cultural producer are produced and consumed at the nexus of political and cultural fields. Based on the analysis of data comprising of interviews with Orhan Pamuk and Amazon consumer reviews of his work we argue that the consumers of Pamuk’s works duplicate and reiterate dualities that have come to represent Turkey. This highlights the role of cultural products as nation-brand makers and the markets as where arts and politics intersect. We suggest that cultural products serve as vehicles through which existing perceptions and real and perceived global political hierarchies are reproduced. © 2018 Springer Nature Limited.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 21Citation - Scopus: 34Grey Wolf Optimizer for Allocation and Sizing of Distributed Renewable Generation(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019) Ahmadi, Bahman; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Özdemir, Serpil; Özdemir, Aydoğan; Advertising; Management Information SystemsIncreasing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) have brought operational and control philosophy changes in Smart Grids (SGs). Renewable energy based technologies are becoming more important due to their economic and environmental impacts. Distributed generations (DGs) in the form of small renewable energy resources such as solar photovoltaics (PVs) and Wind Turbines (WTs) are connected in radial distribution networks near to the loads. This paper presents optimal siting and sizing of distributed renewable energy resource to maintain voltage magnitude profiles. Bus voltage magnitude differences for each hour in a day of a distribution system are formulated as an objective function. Three consecutive days are taken into account representing the three seasons of a year. A new nature inspired algorithm Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) is used as a solution tool. The proposed formulation is applied to 33 bus and 69 bus radial distribution networks. MATLAB simulations are performed to validate the performance of the approach. Simulation results are discussed and compared with of the several available ones'.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 12(il)legitimisation of the Role of the Nation State: Understanding of and Reactions To Internet Censorship in Turkey(Sage Publications Ltd, 2014) Yalkın, Çağrı; Yalkın, Çağrı; Kerrigan, Finola; vom, Lehn Dirk; AdvertisingThis study aims to explore Turkish citizen-consumers' understanding of and reactions to censorship of websites in Turkey by using in-depth interviews and online ethnography. In an environment where sites such as YouTube and others are increasingly being banned the citizen-consumers' macro-level understanding is that such censorship is part of a wider ideological plan and their micro-level understanding is that their relationship with the wider global network is reduced in the sense that they have trouble accessing full information on products services and experiences. The study revealed that citizen-consumers engage in two types of resistance strategies against such domination by the state: using irony as passive resistance and using the very same technology used by the state to resist its domination.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 4Impacts of Load and Generation Volatilities on the Voltage Profiles Improved by Distributed Energy Resources(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2020) Ahmedi, Bahman; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Özdemir, Serpil; Özdemir, Aydoğan; Advertising; Management Information SystemsWeather-dependent distributed renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics (PVs) and wind turbines (WT) are increasingly being connected to distribution networks (DNs). Increased penetration of these intermittent sources brought the necessity of using energy storage systems (ESSs) to achieve the intended benefits. This study presents an optimization process to determine optimal numbers, sizes, locations and distributed energy resources (DERs) as well as to determine the optimal operating strategy of ESSs in a distribution network. The objective is to improve the voltage profile and to minimize the installation costs. The proposed multi-objective formulation problem is solved by using ant lion multi-objective optimization algorithm. At the second part of the study, optimal values are tested with monthly extreme distributions and the impacts of load and distributed generation volatilies on the voltage profiles which were determined by Pareto-optimal solution candidates are analysed. Simulations were performed on 33 bus radial distribution system using Matlab. Finally the benefits obtained by the optimal solutions with less risk are compared.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Invented Myths in Contemporary Turkish Political Advertising(Springer, 2016) Koçer Çamurdan, Suncem; Yalkın, Çağrı; Advertising; Public Relations and InformationThis article focuses on the November 2015 elections in Turkey and analyzes the discourses embedded in the political campaign videos produced and circulated by the Justice and Development Party (ruling party since 2002) Republican People's Party (first political party of the republic) People's Democratic Party (main vehicle of the Kurdish politics) and Nationalist Movement Party (ethno-nationalist party). Republic of Turkey's construction in the national imagination over the past 90 years have both rested on and reproduced a range of themes which are themselves based on recently invented nationalist myths such as the common enemy the multicultural mosaic order and progress fight against imperialism the break from the Ottoman empire and Turkey as bridge between east-and-west. Hence we argue that regardless of their severely diverse stance on key issues in the political realm all the political parties use the hegemony's myths as tools in their advertisements therefore reifying these themes in the public imagination. Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 11Optimal Allocation Of Multi-Type Distributed Generators For Minimization Of Power Losses In Distribution Systems(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019) Ahmadi, Bahman; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Özdemir, Serpil; Özdemir, Aydoğan; Advertising; Management Information SystemsDistributed generation (DG), including photovoltaics (PVs), wind turbines (WTs) are becoming vital for Active Distribution Networks (ADN). If both bus voltage magnitudes and reactive power flowing on the branches during any type of outages are within the acceptable limits the system is called secure. In this paper we solve the contingency problem using a recently developed local constrained optimization based branch outage problem. The optimization problem resulted from the formulation of branch outage is solved by differential evolution method. Using Matlab's parallel computing toolbox contingency analysis for IEEE 300 test system is performed and the results are presented. The study shows that it is straight forward to implement contingency analysis on the Matlab's parallel environment and obtain near linear speedups. Conference Object Citation - WoS: 0Silkroad Onions and Clean Money(Sage Publications Inc, 2015) Yalkın, Çağrı; Yalkın, Çağrı; Kerrigan, Finola; Advertising[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 3Talking Fashion in Female Friendship Groups: Negotiating the Necessary Marketplace Skills and Knowledge(Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2014) Yalkın, Çağrı; Yalkın, Çağrı; Elliott, Richard; AdvertisingThis study revisits contexts of consumer socialization by focusing on fashion consumption among female teenagers. Focus groups and interviews have been utilized to collect data from 12- to 16-year-old female adolescents. The findings indicate that the adolescents cultivate both rational and symbolic skills within their friendship groups through friendship talk. The paper contributes to consumer socialization studies by examining the role of social relationships in and the accounts of the actual uses of fashion products. By doing so it extends scholars' policy makers' schools' and families' understanding of the dynamics involved in the building of young people's consumer identities and what type of issues they face as young consumers. Thus the study provides policy makers with information regarding how consumer skills and knowledge are cultivated and the role of the friendship group in cultivating them which can be used in formulating future policy aimed at consumer education literacy programmes and social marketing aimed at adolescents. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.Conference Object Citation - WoS: 0Citation - Scopus: 0Towards Faster Branch Outage Simulations Using Simulated Annealing and Parallel Programming(IEEE, 2009) Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Dağ, Hasan; Özdemir, Aydoğan; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Dağ, Hasan; Özdemir, Serpil; Advertising; Management Information SystemsContingency studies such as branch outage and generator outage are among important studies of energy management centers operations. With the proliferation of social networking sites, participatory democratic practices increase, new forms of political participation emerge as alternative to the limited ways of political participation in representative democracies, and also online and offline political practices merge, resulting in prominent changes in political life. In recent years, social media led some permanent political and social changes on communicational, organizational and action levels in social movements such as Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, Indignados which occurred against the economic crisis in Spain. A group of scholars argue that the Internet mobilizes people who are already politically active and interested in political issues. However, sceptic scholars underline that the access and interaction via social networking only is not adequate enough for political participation and also can not play a unique role for the enhancement of democracy. During Gezi Park Resistance in Turkey, social media became an alternative news source, it played an important role on communication, organization and cooperation of dissidents providing consistency of resistance by allowing the participation of masses. In a sense, Gezi Parkı Resistance, in which disorganized people, young generation, marginalized identities meet, has contributed to the emergence of new alternative participation networks and made the social media into the arena of the resistance by affecting also the use of social media. Whereas the efforts to understand and frame Gezi Movement still continue among scholars, it seems important to make a general assessment about the civic and political participation of citizens in social networks in the light of empirical findings. This study aims to determine the effects of social media on individuals political participation in Turkey at large. The data were gathered from 11 cities using phone survey method. One of the key findings of the study is that social media have a relative impact on individuals political participation; and variables such as age, education, socio-economic level and the level of interest for politics play an important role in online civic engagementConference Object Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 12Voltage Profile Improving and Peak Shaving Using Multi-Type Distributed Generators and Battery Energy Storage Systems in Distribution Networks(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2020) Ahmedi, Bahman; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Özdemir, Serpil; Özdemir, Aydoğan; Advertising; Management Information SystemsOptimal sizing and siting of distributed generation (DG) units play an important role for improving voltage profile and reducing power losses. Moreover, battery energy storage system (BESS) units may help peak shaving.
