Master Thesis 21. Yüzyıl Istanbul Ahşap Restorasyon Uygulamalarının İncelenmesi ve Halet Çambel Yalısının Deprem Etkisinin Analizi(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2020) Kahraman, Deniz; Erkan, YoncaToday, it is considered with the national and international laws and regulations as necessary that the historical wooden buildings which are characterized as cultural asset are the common heritage for whole humanity, not for the ones who lives in the geography where they locate; and therefore, they should be transferred to the next generations in their original forms. Since the accumulation of knowledge and experiences related to the traditional wooden construction (carrier system, quality of work and connection details) are not applied currently, they sank into oblivion. Every day, it is getting more difficult to adapt those buildings to today's living standards, security and legal conditions. From this point of view, the traditional wooden buildings which are characterized as cultural assets may lose their uniqueness against the new functional needs and legal requirements. On the other hand; protecting the traditional wooden buildings which are characterized as cultural assets, prolonging their lives and transferring to the next generations with accurate restoration decisions and construction materials are among our most important duties (Günay, 2002). Within the frame of this study, the restoration applications of three traditional wooden buildings which locate in İstanbul and considered in the high risk group in accordance with the AFAD's (Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency) Turkish Earthquake Hazard Maps in terms of carrier system interventions. Accordingly; the purpose, scope and methodology of the study are mentioned in the first chapter of the study. In the second chapter; the material and structural features of wood are explained by referring the physical features and mechanical resistance of wood, factors causing deterioration on wood and fire resistance of wood. In the third chapter; the traditional wooden carrier systems, carrier system elements forming the structure and their junction methods and walls are explained. In the forth chapter; the international protection regulations related to the wood and wooden buildings, Turkish laws and regulations related to protection and the historical changes on the earthquake regulations are discussed. In the fifth chapter; information related to three of the buildings locating in İstanbul from 19th century with ongoing restoration works, their locations, history, architectural features and the restoration works applied on them so far is provided. In the sixth chapter; unique wooden construction system of the Halet Çamber Yalısı (Halet Çambel Mansion) which has ongoing restoration works and was constructed through traditional method is modelled in order to reveal the earthquake resistance of the traditional construction systems through scientific data and to provide evidence whether they can meet today's legal requirements. The carrier system of Halet Çambel Yalısı is analysed and investigated through earthquake loads SAP2000 program in accordance with the TS 647 Building Code for Timber Structures, TS 498 Design Loads for Buildings and 2018 Turkish Earthquake Regulations for Buildings. Thus; the intervention decisions related to the carrier system which are formed through the user demands and functional changes in three different restoration applications carried out in İstanbul are presented. Consequently; it is discovered that the carrier system of the Halet Çambel Yalısı, which has been continuing its existence for almost two centuries and was build through traditional construction methods, meets the requirements mentioned in today's standards and regulations. Accordingly, the wooden buildings which are characterized as cultural assets demolished after demanding to carry out restructuring works and by asserting that they are inconvenient in terms of statics such as Hatice Sultan Yalısı and Turşucuzade Ahmet Muhtar Efendi Konağı are discovered to meet the current legal requirements through the modelling formed for Halet Çembel Yalısı. From this point of view; it is obvious that with a decent project work and restoration application in technical terms without section increase becoming different from the genuine sizes or without changing its unique construction system in the wooden building restoration applications, it is possible to transfer them to the next generations.
