Each includes a description of the everyday life of the couple with respect to the division of housework and childcare, a recounting of the history of their relationship and how it became equal, a discussion of how they balance paid work and family, and an analysis of the factors that facilitate their equality. Those factors include their conviction in gender equality, their rejection of essentialist beliefs, their familism, and their socialization in their families of origin. The institutionalization of practices of civic and political participation has been a clear objective of both New Right and New Labour governments and more recently of the coalition government led by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. Regardless of the ideological differences, across time active citizenship has developed assuming common patterns, with specific characteristics that put emphasis on individual and collective responsibility, on the development of community cohesion to solve specific social problems and on the provision to the Third Sector of specific tasks in order to deliver public services. This approach is not free from ambiguities, as it is argued in the presentation of the data from the analysis. Activists vindicate their autonomy, claiming that New Labour reforms as well as the recent Big Society approach have been one sided and in some cases favored the emergence of coalition groups in spite of the survival of smaller organizations. The chapter also focuses on the active participation of British organizations in European networks and at the opportunities that EU funding has opened for activating projects of transnational solidarity. Accordingly, this study focuses on the processes of innovation in bamboo craft initiatives in rural territories of Northeast India. The study examines the craft economy in the region and involvement of main actors in the process from making to marketing via tracing the impact of a decades-old successful development intervention. Based on the neo-endogenous development theory and rural capital framework, the chapter investigates distinct business models emerged through a multi-actor intervention. In the long list of FinTechs, one of the most attractive platforms is the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) lending which aims to bring the investors and borrowers hand in hand, leaving out the traditional intermediaries like banks. The main purpose of a financial institution as an intermediary is of controlling risk and P2P lending platforms innovate and use new ways of risk assessment. In the era of Big Data, using a diverse source of information from spending behaviors of customers, social media behavior, and geographic information along with traditional methods for credit scoring prove to have new insights for the proper and more accurate credit scoring. In this study, we investigate the machine learning techniques on big data platforms, analyzing the credit scoring methods. It has been concluded that on a HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) environment, Logistic Regression performs better than Decision Tree and Random Forest for credit scoring and classification considering performance metrics such as accuracy, precision and recall, and the overall run time of algorithms. Logistic Regression also performs better in time in a single node HDFS configuration compared to a non-HDFS configuration.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 2Analyses of Literary Texts by Using Statistical Inference Methods(CEUR-WS, 2019) Yavuz, Mehmet CanIf a road map had to be drawn for Computational Criticism and subsequent Artificial Literature, it would have certainly considered Shakespearean plays. Demonstration of these structures through text analysis can be seen as both a naive effort and a scientific view of the characteristics of the texts. In this study, the textual analysis of Shakespeare plays was carried out for this purpose. Methodologically, we consecutively use Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) in order to extract topics and then reduce topic distribution over documents into two-dimensional space. The first question asks if there is a genre called Romance between Comedy and Tragedy plays. The second question is, if each character’s speech is taken as a text, whether the dramatic relationship between them can be revealed. Consequently, we find relationships between genres, also verified by literary theory and the main characters follow the antagonisms within the play as the length of speech increases. Although the results of the classification of the side characters in the plays are not always what one would have expected based on the reading of the plays, there are observations on dramatic fiction, which is also verified by literary theory. Istanbul is a center of trade, tourism, and industry; 60 % of total logistics activities take place in Istanbul. At the same time, capacities, infrastructures, and performance of logistics system are affecting the logistics systems and industries of European countries and neighborhoods. However, solving the urban logistics problems have become regional and global ones and especially European countries, industries, and their commercial actors cannot ignore these problems. In addition to urban freight flows, high volume of international and domestic cargo flows causes different problems related to urban logistics. On the other hand, Istanbul has the different logistics nodes as airports, organized industrial zones, business centers, whereas logistics networks and links between nodes are not required level. This study focuses on the logistics nodes, relationships, opportunities and facilities of transportation, and effects of intermodal freight terminals to solving problems of the insufficient connections between these nodes. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 0Application of fluorescence technique for understanding film formation from polymer latexes and composites(Elsevier, 2021) Pekcan, Mehmet Önder; Pekcan, ÖnderThis chapter summarizes the application of fluorescence technique to understand all aspects of film formation using both pure polymer latexes and polymer nanocomposites. Transient fluorescence, steady state fluorescence, and photon transmission techniques were used in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy/atomic force microscopy to learn this process with different latex coatings. Polystyrene latexes and poly(methyl methacrylate) latexes labeled with fluorescence probes (such as pyrene, fluorescein, and naphthalene) were used as the model polymer matrixes. We also introduced theoretical models to describe film formation stage by stage including void closure, healing, and interdiffusion and produced the activation energies related to the process. Furthermore the contributing parameters to the film formation process are identified including annealing time-temperature, solvent vapor, film thickness, particle size, and different filler materials and ratios (clay, TiO2, carbon nanotube, etc.) in both pure latex and composite systems. © 2021 Elsevier B.V. By understanding and documenting how women in a village in Turkey learn the craft of weaving, this paper reformulates the relationship between the design field and the local context as learning from the local and aims to contributes to the design education field. During the summers of 2017, 2018, and 2019, fieldwork using the participant observation method was conducted in the village. The detailed account of the learning process in this local weaving practice allows us to define this learning as “apprenticeship type learning in the local.” The practice consists of a process in which the forms of learning and teaching are inseparably interwoven with socio-spatial elements. It draws together flexible learning processes where the teaching moments blur and students learn in action in a dialogical exchange through observing and making. Bısson, Chrıstophe Louıs; Mark Palmer, MarkUsing the resistance literature as an underpinning theoretical framework this chapter analyzes how Web designers through their daily practices (i) adopt recursive adaptive and resisting behavior regarding the inclusion of social cues online and (ii) shape the socio-technical power relationship between designers and other stakeholders. Five vignettes in the form of case studies with expert individual Web designers are used. Findings point out at three types of emerging resistance namely: market driven resistance ideological resistance and functional resistance. In addition a series of propositions are provided linking the various themes. Depending on technological developments, some requirements, which can be defined as speed, lower cost, and high quality, have become more important to stay in a highly competitive environment for companies and supply chains compared with the past. Autonomous robotic systems can help to reach these aims. They can provide a more safe working environment in warehouses, distribution centers, and other logistics facilities. İn addition to that, they can provide opportunities for carrying out lower costly, speedy, and quality logistics operations. Furthermore, robotic systems continue to improve, and creating more specific robotics that will be used in the field of logistics will be possible in the near future. Moreover, robotic systems becoming smart and autonomous thanks to artificial intelligence, developed sensors, and trainability. In the future, requirements for human force may reduce in logistics operations since robotics may carry out logistics activities autonomously depending on these technological improvements.
