This article argues that within the scope of an extensive body of films produced about women in the 1980s, Her Name Is Vasfiye, Aaahh Belinda!, How to Save Asiye, Ten Women, and My Dreams, My Love and You opened up a significant space for discussions about ideological constructions concerning images of women in cinema. By deploying reflexive and fragmented structures, laying bare the ideological operations of voice-over and dubbing, and deploying the screen personas Türkan Şoray and Müjde Ar as cinematic tools, these films offer up a critique of representations of women onscreen, including the trend of “women's films.”Conference Object Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Cybernetic Narrative Modes of Circularity, Feedback and Perception in New Media Artworks(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2015) Selen, EserPurpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore how second-order cybernetics (von Foerster, 2002) functions in new media artworks, specifically through information, system and user. While formulating the relationship between new media artworks and the discourses surrounding cybernetics the paper analyzes Popp's (2006) Bit. Fall, Wojtowicz's (2007) Elsewhere News and Zeren Goktan's (2013) The Counter, as exemplars of alternative methods of narration. This study further argues that these new media artworks employ a cybernetic narrative via modes of "circularity," "feedback," and "perception." Design/methodology/approach - This paper offers a theoretical approach to new media art and cybernetics in order to analyze three select works. Since the works mentioned have diverse takes on the presented concepts each is discussed and analyzed in their frame of production in relation to cybernetics and new media standpoints. Findings - It is significant that these three artists attempt to invert the quotidian into the concept of new media while cybernetics facilitates their interactive art installations. The fully functioning circularity in these works breaks down the linear narrative structure while regenerating a non-linear narrative together with the flow of information, utilization of the systems and the user interaction. In these works narrative functions as a tool for interaction, which is cybernetically generated by the user (human) and the systems (machine). Originality/value - New media artworks at least suggest a possibility of observing contemporary art and its history in the making if not generating it altogether through cybernetic modes of "circularity," "feedback" and "perception." The experience of these artworks for each user differs depending on their choice to either reject or become immersed in the work. The possible sensoria, however, may still be betrayed by the mind's willingness to cooperate or at times by the ability to perceive.Article Citation - Scopus: 27Encountering Difference and Radical Democratic Trajectory: an Analysis of Gezi Park as Public Space(Routledge, 2015) İnceoğlu, İremSummer 2013 was a historic period in regards to political activism in Turkey. Commonly referred to as ‘the Gezi Resistance’ the grass-roots mobilisation caught the rather self-assured AKP (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi) government off guard as hundreds of thousands rushed to the streets squares and parks to reclaim those spaces publicly. The resistance started with the attempt by a handful of environmentalists to protect a few trees being cut down in central Istanbul. Then it quickly moved beyond just about protecting a few trees and became a collective reaction to the recent and ongoing urban modelling projects that would turn commons into gated spaces for consumption. Significantly the Gezi Resistance which reclaimed public spaces started to mobilise multiple identity groups who entered into the political arena in the radical democratic sense. This paper aims to scrutinise Gezi Resistance and the occupation of the park in relation to reclaiming public spaces and the politics of identity hence as an opportunity for a radical democratic emancipation. In this context emancipation refers to contestation against the dominating discourses of the majoritarian government with neoconservative tendencies. Public space is contextualised as the agonistic domain that enables individuals both to appear hence become visible for a possible interaction and acknowledgement and join collaborative struggles against dominant discourses. Framing means selecting some aspects of a perceived reality and making them more salient in a communicating text. News frames give us definitions and identify those responsible for an event make moral judgements, and propose solutions to problems. Food as political communication is extensively studied as a nation branding and public diplomacy tool. However, academic studies seem to overlook the role that food plays in populism and political polarization. Pointing out a gap in the field, I explore the role of culinary culture in Turkish politics between 2013 and 2019 to demonstrate its polarizing effect and its role in social engineering. I argue that social engineering as part of constructing native/national culinary items, efforts to polarize people through an AKP-sanctioned culinary tradition, and the particulars of the palace menu, are at once contradictory and consistent. Some scholars note that the growing decline in youth's news consumption raises concerns about the future of democracy in various media systems. This research explores the factors that influence college students' news consumption behaviour in the United Kingdom and Turkey through an interpretative approach. The data are based on qualitative in-depth interviews with around 50 students studying in major universities in London and Istanbul. The findings show overarching common trends such as increased mobile news access, incidental exposure to news on social media, irregular snacking and verifying of news that drive youth's news consumption behaviour. Findings also show that traditional media use for news has almost been replaced by online media and the modality of traditional media do not easily fit in with youth's daily routine of studies, work and commute.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Learning From Art Museums: Three Course Assignments for Pre-Service Elementary Teachers(2010) Balkır Kuru, NurThis paper presents a course assignment that required pre-service teacher education students to reflect on a museum in the Fort Worth and Dallas Metroplex in Texas. As part of their art education course at the College of Visual Arts and Design of the University of North Texas students experimented with a variety of media and concepts to develop the skills necessary to bring art to life for children. These art-making and related experiences correlated with and reinforced the concepts introduced in the lecture portion of the class. Both lecture and studio explored the universal themes of personal identity the natural and man-made environment and storytelling as they appear throughout the history of art and are relevant to children's art today. This paper deals primarily with two main focal points. First, it focuses on the film's portrayal of the protagonist, Carole's abjection, her problem of non-differentiation, as evidenced by her relation to the maternal body and to corporeality. Secondly, the article investigates how the film positions its viewers with regard to Carole. It questions how Repulsion impels its spectators to engage Carole with a similar non-differentiation by generating a complex web of ambiguities with regard to the differentiation between external/internal, objective/subjective and reality/fantasy.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 5Policies of Media and Cultural Integration in Germany: From Guestworker Programmes To a More Integrative Framework(Sage Publications Ltd, 2014) Bozdağ Bucak, ÇiğdemAfter the arrival of the first labour migrants in Germany in the 1960s a gradual change in the perception of migrants in German politics took place: from guests (Gastarbeiter) and foreigners (Ausländer) to citizens as members of a new form of 'us' that is constructed within diversity. These transformations were reflected in Germany's migration-related policies throughout recent history. This article focuses on media-related policies for cultural integration which go hand in hand with the developments in the general migration policy framework analysing different phases after the 1960s. In general we observe an increasing institutionalization of integration policies a more comprehensive understanding of the role of the media for integration purposes and a diversification of measures even more rapidly after the enactment of the Immigration Act in 2004. Cultural diversity is now emphasized as an enriching factor for the German mediascape. However there continues to be a need for long-term policies in order to improve media diversity in practice. © The Author(s) 2014.Article Citation - Scopus: 8“the Public Immoralist”: Discourses of Queer Subjectification in Contemporary Turkey(University of Southern California, 2020) Selen, EserThis study examines the forms of queer subjectification that have been molded through regular acts of gender- and sexuality-based violence against LGBTQ+ citizens as encouraged by the dominant religious and secular discourses in Turkey. Within that context, this article explicates the discursive mechanisms at work in the statements that were made by politicians and journalists between 2002 and 2018. Focus groups and interviews have been utilized to collect data from 12- to 16-year-old female adolescents. The findings indicate that the adolescents cultivate both rational and symbolic skills within their friendship groups through friendship talk. The paper contributes to consumer socialization studies by examining the role of social relationships in and the accounts of the actual uses of fashion products. By doing so it extends scholars' policy makers' schools' and families' understanding of the dynamics involved in the building of young people's consumer identities and what type of issues they face as young consumers. Thus the study provides policy makers with information regarding how consumer skills and knowledge are cultivated and the role of the friendship group in cultivating them which can be used in formulating future policy aimed at consumer education literacy programmes and social marketing aimed at adolescents. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.Article Citation - WoS: 35Understanding the Images of Alan Kurdi With "small Data": a Qualitative, Comparative Analysis of Tweets About Refugees in Turkey and Flanders (belgium)(USC Annenberg Press, 2017) Bozdağ Bucak, Çiğdem; Smets, KevinOne of the peak moments of the debate on the European refugee crisis was caused by the circulation of images of Alan Kurdi, a three-year-old Syrian boy who drowned in the Aegean Sea on September 2, 2015. The images triggered worldwide reactions from politicians, nongovernmental organizations, and citizens. This article analyzes these reactions through a qualitative study of 961 tweets from Turkey and Flanders (Belgium), contextualizing them into the framing and representation of refugees before and after the images were released. Our study finds that, despite their iconic qualities and potential to mobilize Twitter users around refugee issues, the images did not cause a major shift in common discourses and representations. Instead, references to Kurdi were incorporated into preexisting discourses on and representations of refugees, thus offering different actors in the public debate on refugees with new symbols and motifs to construct meaning.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 8Use of Social Media in the Struggle Surrounding Violence Against Turkish Women(University of Southern California, 2020) Ogan, Christine L.; Baş, ÖzenIncreasingly large numbers of women in Turkey have suffered abuse or lost their lives through attacks by men. In 2019 alone, 474 women were killed by men. Based on theories of connective action and affective publics, this study examines online activism regarding violence against Turkish women through a qualitative content analysis of Twitter messages with popular hashtags. Posts addressing six different cases of violent crimes directed at women that took place between 2015 and 2019 constituted the sample. The results show that large numbers support women through postings and repostings of solidarity, emotional expressions, remembrance, and dissemination of information. Because of the government's authoritarian and repressive tactics in silencing critical voices on social media and in the streets, the potential to build an organized social movement to curtail these violent crimes is minimal.Article Citation - WoS: 21Citation - Scopus: 27Vacillation in Turkey's Popular Global Tv Exports: Toward a More Complex Understanding of Distribution(USC Annenberg Press, 2016) Alankuş, Sevda; Yanardağoğlu, EylemAudience demand for Turkey's TV series has increased their strength in the regional market and beyond. By mid-2014 more than 70 Turkish TV dramas reached audiences in 75 countries. Some experts have characterized this as neo-Ottoman cool, referring to Turkey's growing "soft power" role in successfully combining Islam with democracy. However, survey data from 16 Arab countries, previous audience studies, and our in-depth interviews with Istanbul-based producers and distributors refute this. Neo-Ottoman cool does not register the full dynamics of contingent relations between economy, politics, ideology, and media flows. Our research underscores the region's glocal flexibility and the market articulations overarching Turkey's soft power ambitions, how the drama genre attracts women cross-culturally, and the limits of notions of cultural proximity.
