Article Citation Count: 5(3+3+2) warped-like product manifolds with Spin(7) holonomy(Elsevier Science Bv, 2011) Bilge, Ayşe Hümeyra; Bilge, Ayşe HümeyraWe consider a generalization of eight-dimensional multiply warped product manifolds as a special warped product by allowing the fiber metric to be non-block diagonal. We define this special warped product as a (3 + 3 + 2) warped-like manifold of the form M = F x B. where the base B is a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold and the fibre F is of the form F = F-1 x F-2 where the F-i(i = 1 2) are Riemannian 3-manifolds. We prove that the connection on M is completely determined by the requirement that the Bonan 4-form given in the work of Yasui and Ootsuka [Y. Yasui and T. Ootsuka Spin(7) holonomy manifold and superconnection Class. Quantum Gravity 18(2001)807-816] be closed. Assuming that the F-i are complete connected and simply connected it follows that they are isometric to S-3 with constant curvature k > 0 and the Yasui-Ootsuka solution is unique in the class of (3 + 3 + 2) warped-like product metrics admitting a specific Spin(7) structure. As contrasted to the traditional VLP system, the proposed SM-based 3D VLP system first estimates the optical channel gain between the transmitting light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and the two photo detectors (PDs) attached to the user by a pilot-based channel estimation technique. Then, unknown 3D positions of the receiver are determined by the trilateration algorithm with distances computed from the estimates of the channel gains. Consequently, the 3D VLP system achieves an interference -free transmission with increased spectral efficiency and without the need for a demultiplexing process at the receiving end. The algorithm's performance is evaluated regarding positioning error by applying the SM over four LEDs and the number of pilots selected as a function of the environmental signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The computer simulation results show that the positioning errors are obtained in an order of magnitude smaller than RSS-based techniques in an indoor industrial environment. This is mainly because the distances involved in determining the 3D positions can be determined more precisely by the pilot-aided channel estimation method without creating any data rate problem in transmission due to the higher spectral efficiency of the SM.Article Citation Count: 23D Printer Selection for the Sustainable Manufacturing Industry Using an Integrated Decision-Making Model Based on Dombi Operators in the Fermatean Fuzzy Environment(Mdpi, 2024) Görçün, Ömer Faruk; Zolfani, Sarfaraz Hashemkhani; Kucukonder, Hande; Antucheviciene, Jurgita; Pavlovskis, MiroslavasThree-dimensional printers (3DPs), as critical parts of additive manufacturing (AM), are state-of-the-art technologies that can help practitioners with digital transformation in production processes. Three-dimensional printer performance mostly depends on good integration with artificial intelligence (AI) to outperform humans in overcoming complex tasks using 3DPs equipped with AI technology, particularly in producing an object with no smooth surface and a standard geometric shape. Hence, 3DPs also provide an opportunity to improve engineering applications in manufacturing processes. As a result, AM can create more sustainable production systems, protect the environment, and reduce external costs arising from industries' production activities. Nonetheless, practitioners do not have sufficient willingness since this kind of transformation in production processes is a crucial and irrevocable decision requiring vast knowledge and experience. Thus, presenting a methodological frame and a roadmap may help decision-makers take more responsibility for accelerating the digital transformation of production processes. The current study aims to fill the literature's critical theoretical and managerial gaps. Therefore, it suggests a powerful and efficient decision model for solving 3DP selection problems for industries. The suggested hybrid FF model combines the Fermatean Fuzzy Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (FF-SWARA) and the Fermatean Ranking of Alternatives through Functional mapping of criterion sub-intervals into a Single Interval (FF-RAFSI) approaches. The novel FF framework is employed to solve a critical problem encountered in the automobile manufacturing industry with the help of two related case studies. In addition, the criteria are identified and categorized regarding their influence degrees using a group decision approach based on an extended form of the Delphi with the aid of the Fermatean fuzzy sets. According to the conclusions of the analysis, the criteria "Accuracy" and "Quality" are the most effective measures. Also, the suggested hybrid model and its outcomes were tested by executing robustness and validation checks. The results of the analyses prove that the suggested integrated framework is a robust and practical decision-making tool.Article Citation Count: 13D-printed actuator-based beam-steering approach for improved physical layer security in visible light communication(Optica Publishing Group, 2022) Panayırcı, Erdal; Gurcuoglu, Oguz; Panayırcı, Erdal; Kurt, Gunes Karabulut; Ferhanoglu, OnurIn this study, we present the design, manufacture, and implementation of a 3D-printed lens scanner-based beam steering for use in visible light communication (VLC) applications. The 5 cm x 5 cm scanner is designed for low-cost 3D printing with fused deposition modeling using polylactic acid. Scanning is facilitated through electromagnetic actuation of the lens frame, carrying a conventional 25 mm lens, from two nearly orthogonal directions. The serpentine spring that connects the lens frame to the external frame is tailored to offer similar spring constants in the directions of actuation and has minimal (<1.5 mm) sag due to the mass of the lens. The manufactured actuator was integrated on a miniaturized VLC test bed (70 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm). Using the test bed, we characterized the applied voltage versus beam displacement behavior of the actuator in the lateral plane and demonstrated beam steering on amoving target with face-recognition feedback. The proposed scheme was targeted to offer an improved security measure in VLC through tracking the legitimate receiver (i.e., via face recognition) and uses the feedback to steer the focused light onto the targeted device. The joint use of focusing and steering features allows for the legitimate receiver to roam within the room while enjoying the improved secrecy due to the focused light. We calculate the secrecy capacity for the demonstrated approach, which compares favorably with a number of jamming, spatial modulation, and beam-forming counterparts. The presented actuator can be used with larger room dimensions, yet upscaling to larger illumination units will require the use of a lens having smaller focus to address a larger total steering angle. This study aimed to determine whether or not state hospitals and private hospitals that accept state health insurance in Istanbul are providing abortion services and for what indications. Method: Between October and December 2015 a mystery patient telephone survey of 154 hospitals 43 public and 111 private in Istanbul was conducted. Results: 14% of the state hospitals in Istanbul perform abortions without restriction as to reason provided in the current law while 60% provide the service if there is a medical necessity. A quarter of state hospitals in Istanbul do not provide abortion services at all. 48.6% of private hospitals that accept the state health insurance also provide for abortion without restriction while 10% do not provide abortion services under any circumstances. Key conclusions: State and private hospitals in Istanbul are not providing abortion services to the full extent allowed under the law. The low numbers of state hospitals offering abortions without restriction indicates a de facto privatization of the service. This same trend is also visible in many private hospitals partnering with the state that do not provide abortion care. While many women may choose a private provider the lack of provision of abortion care at state hospitals and those private hospitals working with the state leaves women little option but to purchase these services from private providers at some times subtantial costs.Article Citation Count: 18Absolute configuration and biological profile of pyrazoline enantiomers as MAO inhibitory activity(Wiley, 2019) Yelekçi, Kemal; Sarıgül, Sevgi; Bultinck, Patrick; Herrebout, Wouter; Doğan, İlknur; Yelekçi, Kemal; Uçar, Gülberk; Kelekçi, Nesrin GökhanA new racemic pyrazoline derivative was synthesized and resolved to its enantiomers using analytic and semipreparative high-pressure liquid chromatography. The absolute configuration of both fractions was established using vibrational circular dichroism. The in vitro monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitory profiles were evaluated for the racemate and both enantiomers separately for the two isoforms of the enzyme. The racemic compound and both enantiomers were found to inhibit hMAO-A selectively and competitively. In particular the R enantiomer was detected as an exceptionally potent and a selective MAO-A inhibitor (K-i = 0.85 x 10(-3) +/- 0.05 x 10(-3) mu M and SI: 2.35 x 10(-5)) whereas S was determined as poorer compound than R in terms of K-i and SI (0.184 +/- 0.007 and 0.001). The selectivity of the enantiomers was explained by molecular modeling docking studies based on the PDB enzymatic models of MAO isoforms.Article Citation Count: 11An advanced Grey Wolf Optimization Algorithm and its application to planning problem in smart grids(Springer, 2022) Ceylan, Oğuzhan; Younesi, Soheil; Ceylan, Oguzhan; Ozdemir, AydoganDue to the complex mathematical structures of the models in engineering, heuristic methods which do not require derivative are developed. This paper improves recently developed Grey Wolf Optimization Algorithm by extending it with three new features: namely presenting a new formulation for evaluating the positions of search agents, applying mirroring distance to the variables violating the limits, and proposing a dynamic decision approach for each agent either in exploration or exploitation phases. The performance of Advanced Grey Wolf Optimization (AGWO) method is tested using several optimization test functions and compared to several heuristic algorithms. Moreover, a planning problem in smart grids is solved by considering different objective functions using 33 and 141 bus distribution test systems. From the numerical simulation results, we observe that, AGWO is able to find the best results compared to other methods from 10 and 9 out of 13 test functions for 30 and 60 variables, respectively. Similar to this, it finds best function values for 5 out of 10 fixed number of variable test functions. Also, the result of the CEC-C06 2019 benchmark functions shows that AGWO outperforms 8 for optimization problems from 10. In power distribution system planning problem, better objective function values were determined by using AGWO, resulting a better voltage profile, less losses, and less emission costs compared to solutions obtained by Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms.Article Citation Count: 0Adverse selection in cryptocurrency markets(Wiley, 2023) Tiniç, Murat; Sensoy, Ahmet; Akyildirim, Erdinc; Corbet, ShaenIn this article we investigate the influence that information asymmetry may have on future volatility, liquidity, market toxicity, and returns within cryptocurrency markets. We use the adverse-selection component of the effective spread as a proxy for overall information asymmetry. Using order and trade data from the Bitfinex exchange, we first document statistically significant adverse-selection costs for major cryptocurrencies. Also, our results suggest that adverse-selection costs, on average, correspond to 10% of the estimated effective spread, indicating an economically significant impact of adverse-selection risk on transaction costs in cryptocurrency markets. Finally, we document that adverse-selection costs are important predictors of intraday volatility, liquidity, market toxicity, and returns.Book Review Citation Count: 0Aid and Technological Cooperation as a Foreign Policy Tool for Emerging Donors: The Case of Brazil(Uluslararasi Iliskiler Konseyi Dernegi, 2022) Akinci, Basri Alp[Abstract Not Available]Article Citation Count: 0Amplitude and Frequency Modulations with Cellular Neural Networks(Springer, 2015) Tander, Baran; Özmen, AtillaAmplitude and frequency modulations are still the most popular modulation techniques in data transmission at telecommunication systems such as radio and television broadcasting gsm etc. However the architectures of these individual systems are totally different. In this paper it is shown that a cellular neural network with an opposite-sign template can behave either as an amplitude or a frequency modulator. Firstly a brief information about these networks is given and then the amplitude and frequency surfaces of the generated quasi-sine oscillations are sketched with respect to various values of their cloning templates. Secondly it is proved that any of these types of modulations can be performed by only varying the template components without ever changing their structure. Finally a circuit is designed simulations are presented and performance of the proposed system is evaluated. The main contribution of this work is to show that both amplitude and frequency modulations can be realized under the same architecture with a simple technique specifically by treating the input signals as template components.Article Citation Count: 12An Analysis of International Relations Academics in Turkey and their approaches to the field: TRIP 2014 Faculty Survey Results(Uluslararası İlişkiler Konseyi Derneği, 2016) Aydın, Mustafa; Hisarlıoğlu, Fulya; Yazgan, KorhanDespite the increasing interest in the studies inquiring the limits autonomous character of and the interactions between the International Relations (IR) discipline and other academic fields the scope and scale of empirical research on these issues are relatively small. We design two treatments: symmetrical and asymmetrical, meaning the demand distribution of the two flights having the same size of support or not. Several insights are obtained. First, the decision makers' price choices are closer to the theoretical benchmarks in the symmetrical setting. Next, the subjects do not want to overprice and fly with empty seats, exhibiting loss aversion with reference point. Finally, the subjects often treat the flights as independent rather than interrelated and price them separately, using an anchoring-and-adjusting heuristic.Article Citation Count: 14Antioxidant and Enzyme Inhibitory Properties, and HPLC-MS/MS Profiles of Different Extracts of Arabis carduchorum Boiss.: An Endemic Plant to Turkey(Mdpi, 2022) Uba, Abdullahi Ibrahim; Zengin, Gokhan; Montesano, Domenico; Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Selvi, Selami; Ulusan, Musa Denizhan; Caprioli, GiovanniIn this study, six extracts of Arabis carduchorum prepared from solvents of varying polarity (water, methanol, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane, and n-hexane) were investigated for their chemical profiles and total phenolic and flavonoid contents (TPC/TFC) using HPLC-MS/MS and spectrophotometric/colorimetric assays, respectively, along with the assessment of their antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory effects. In general, the polar extracts (methanol, water, and infusion) showed higher TPC/TFC than the other extracts (range: 13.73-26.62 mg GAE/g; 2.66-52.95 mg RE/g, respectively). The total antioxidant capacity of the polar extracts ranged from 0.90-1.85 mmol TE/g in phosphomolybdenum assay, while the free radical scavenging potential ranged from 4.36-32.13 mg TE/g and 12.58-67.73 mg TE/g in DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively. While the water and infuse extract inhibited only butyrylcholinesterase (2.68 and 2.39 mg GALAE/g, respectively), the other extracts were found to inhibit both acetyl- and butyryl-cholinesterases (0.96-2.73 mg GALAE/g and 1.86-5.11 mg GALAE/g, respectively). On the contrary, all extracts exhibited anti-tyrosinase (40.24-59.22 mg KAE/g) and anti-amylase (0.09-0.63 mmol ACAE/g) activities. Overall, this study highlighted the effect of solvent polarity on the extraction of bioactive compounds and the biological properties of the extracts of A. carduchorum; hence, the results obtained could be used to guide optimum extraction in future studies.Article Citation Count: 7Apolipoprotein B gene variants are involved in the determination of blood glucose and lipid levels in patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus(Wiley, 2006) Duman, Belgin Süsleyici; Öztürk, Melek; Yilmazer, Selma; Çağatay, Penbe; Hatemi, HüsrevWe have examined the frequency of the EcoRI XbaI and MspI RFLPs of the apolipoprotein B (apo 13) gene in I 10 type 2 diabetic patients and 9 1 healthy control subjects in order to ascertain whether variation in this gene may influence the development of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (type 2 diabetes). Serum lipids including total-cholesterol (T-Chol) triacylglycerol (TAG) apolipoprotein E (apo E) apolipoprotein Al (apo Al) apolipoprotein B and lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) were analysed. Genomic DNA was extracted and the apo B polymorphic regions amplified by the polymerase chain reaction. Regions carrying EcoRI XbaI and MspI restriction sites present in the apo B gene were amplified and digested separately by the respective enzymes. No significant difference for genotypic frequencies was observed for the EcoRI XbaI and MspI restriction sites in type 2 diabetic patients as compared to controls. Type 2 diabetic patients and controls with EcoRI +/+ and XbaI +/+ genotypes had higher apo E levels. The MspI +/+ genotype is more frequent in the patient and control groups With elevated T-Chol. Furthermore the EcoRI -/- XbaI -/- and MspI +/+ genotypes were found to be significantly more frequent in type 2 diabetic patients with higher blood glucose levels. This study identifies the apo B gene polymorphisms in modulating plasma lipid/lipoprotein and glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. In this study, deep neural network (DNN) structure was proposed for modelling of the ternary liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE). LLE data of (water + butyric acid + 5-methyl-2-hexanone) ternaries defined at three different temperatures of 298.2, 308.2, and 318.2 K and P = 101.3 kPa, were obtained experimentally and then correlated with nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) and universal quasi-chemical (UNIQUAC) models. The performance of the proposed DNN model was compared with that of NRTL and UNIQUAC in terms of the root mean square errors (RMSE). RMSE values were obtained between 0.02-0.06 for NRTL and UNIQUAC, respectively. For DNN, the error values were obtained between 0.00005-0.01 for all temperatures. According to the calculated RMSE values, it was shown that proposed DNN structure can be better choice for the modelling of LLE system. Othmer-Tobias and Hand correlations were also used for the experimental tie-lines. Distribution coefficient and separation factors were calculated from the experimental data.Article Citation Count: 3Artificial neural network based estimation of sparse multipath channels in OFDM systems(SPRINGER, VAN GODEWIJCKSTRAAT 30, 3311 GZ DORDRECHT, NETHERLANDS, 2021-01) Şenol, Habib; Özmen, Atilla; Özmen, AtillaIn order to increase the transceiver performance in frequency selective fading channel environment, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is used to combat inter-symbol-interference. In this work, a channel estimation scheme for an OFDM system in the presence of sparse multipath channel is studied using the artificial neural networks (ANN). By means of ANN's learning capability, it is shown that how to model and obtain a channel estimate and how it allows the proposed technique to give a better system throughput. The performance of proposed method is compared with the Matching Pursuit (MP) and Orthogonal MP (OMP) algorithms that are commonly used in compressed sensing literature in order to estimate delay locations and tap coefficients of a sparse multipath channel. In this work, we propose a performance- efficient ANN based sparse channel estimator with lower computational cost than that of MP and OMP based channel estimators. Even though there is a slight performance lost in a few simulation scenarios in which we have lower computational complexity advantage, in most scenarios, our computer simulations corroborate that our low complexity ANN based channel estimator has better mean squared error and the corresponding symbol error rate performances comparing with MP and OMP algorithms.Article Citation Count: 0Assesment of soft error sensitivity of power flow analysis(Gazi Univ, Fac Engineering Architecture, 2023) Yetkin, Emrullah Fatih; Yetkin, Emrullah FatihToday's power systems are large and interconnected to each other with many buses, lines, loads, and generators. Even the solution of a single snapshot of the system for specific conditions requires the solution of systems of equations with large sizes. Thus, to obtain the results in a reasonable time for large problems like electrical power flow simulations, modern large computational environments should be employed. However, because of the increasing number of components in the modern computational environment, the possibility of soft errors also increases. Soft errors can be defined as failures arising from several fluctuations due to x-rays, cosmic particle effects, etc. These types of errors usually appear at any time of computation as a bit-flip in any floating-point operations. In this paper, we will investigate the soft-error effects on large-scale power flow simulations. Generally, power flow calculations are performed by using Newton Raphson Method. The system is modeled by nonlinear equations and the solution process requires a linear solver is employed to take the inverse of the Jacobian matrix at each iteration. In this study, the soft-error sensitivity of the numerical methods used in load flow was examined, and the problems that may be encountered were revealed.Article Citation Count: 1Assessing protein-ligand binding modes with computational tools: the case of PDE4B(Springer, 2017) Akdoğan, Ebru Demet; Aviyente, Viktorya; Akten, Ebru Demet; Monard, GeraldIn a first step in the discovery of novel potent inhibitor structures for the PDE4B family with limited side effects we present a protocol to rank newly designed molecules through the estimation of their IC values. Our protocol is based on reproducing the linear relationship between the logarithm of experimental IC values [(IC)] and their calculated binding free energies (). From 13 known PDE4B inhibitors we show here that (1) binding free energies obtained after a docking process by AutoDock are not accurate enough to reproduce this linear relationshipArticle Citation Count: 3Assessing the impact of minor modifications on the interior structure of GRU: GRU1 and GRU2(Wiley, 2022) Yiğit, Gülsüm; Amasyali, Mehmet FatihIn this study, two GRU variants named GRU1 and GRU2 are proposed by employing simple changes to the internal structure of the standard GRU, which is one of the popular RNN variants. Comparative experiments are conducted on four problems: language modeling, question answering, addition task, and sentiment analysis. Moreover, in the addition task, curriculum learning and anti-curriculum learning strategies, which extend the training data having examples from easy to hard or from hard to easy, are comparatively evaluated. Accordingly, the GRU1 and GRU2 variants outperformed the standard GRU. In addition, the curriculum learning approach, in which the training data is expanded from easy to difficult, improves the performance considerably.Article Citation Count: 4Assessment and simulation of water transfer for the megacity Istanbul(Bellwether Publishing, Ltd., 2021) Bilge, Ayşe Hümeyra; Bilge, Ayşe Hümeyra; Ülker, DuyguThe population of Istanbul increased from three to fifteen million from 1970 to 2018. The city, which has no perennial fresh water resources within its metropolitan boundaries, has long imported water from other basins. In this study, the performance of a reservoir system fed by surface runoff and inter-basin water transfer is investigated and applied. Simulations are run for water demand estimates and with Gamma-distributed realizations of monthly precipitation, based on 105-year temperature and precipitation data. The research shows that after 2060, existing and transferred water alone will not be sufficient to meet demand and it is expected that the megacity Istanbul will be on a path towards water crisis after this date, if not before. It is concluded that it is vital to adopt a more diversified water supply and demand management portfolio with extensive Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) measures for “Water Sensitive Cities”. Strategies for reliable system operation that take foreseeable environmental problems into account are proposed.
