Article Citation Count: 0Accented Essays: Documentary as Artistic Practice in Contemporary Audiovisual Works from Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francıs Ltd, 2019) Akçalı Kuyucu, ElifThis article looks at the use of documentary filmmaking in contemporary artistic practices in Turkey, specifically focusing on three works that adopt a first-person, subjective viewpoint: Didem Pekun's Of Dice and Men (2016), Sener ozmen's How to Tell of Peace to a Living Dove? (2015), and Aykan Safoglu's Off-White Tulips (2013). Made by artists in transition, these films tackle themes of belonging and identity through stylistic choices proper to essayistic filmmaking, which allow these works to be regarded as accented essays. Framing means selecting some aspects of a perceived reality and making them more salient in a communicating text. News frames give us definitions and identify those responsible for an event make moral judgements, and propose solutions to problems. The analysis of the news frames utilized by four newspapers underlines the fact that in a polarized media environment news frames are highly politicized and the distinction between news frames and official discourse is frequently blurred.Article Citation Count: 12Guiding metaphors of nationalism: the Cyprus issue and the construction of Turkish national identity in online discussions(Sage Publications Inc, 2008) Baruh, Lemi; Popescu, MihaelaThis article is a study of three major metaphors organizing nationalistic discourse about Cyprus in two online forums for Turkish university students. The analysis suggests that discussants symbolically warranted their constructions of the future of Cyprus and Turkish Cypriots with metaphors of blood and heroism that emphasized their personal and collective memory of sacrifice. Sports metaphors were used predominantly to convey a sense of the strategic importance of Cyprus. In addition discussants employed gender and sexual metaphors to structure the tension between nationalist feelings associated with motherland Turkey as a pure virgin female and the geopolitical demands of the nation-state portrayed as a father faced with uneasy choices.Article Citation Count: 0Invented Myths in Contemporary Turkish Political Advertising(Springer, 2016) Koçer Çamurdan, Suncem; Yalkın, ÇağrıThis article focuses on the November 2015 elections in Turkey and analyzes the discourses embedded in the political campaign videos produced and circulated by the Justice and Development Party (ruling party since 2002) Republican People's Party (first political party of the republic) People's Democratic Party (main vehicle of the Kurdish politics) and Nationalist Movement Party (ethno-nationalist party). Republic of Turkey's construction in the national imagination over the past 90 years have both rested on and reproduced a range of themes which are themselves based on recently invented nationalist myths such as the common enemy the multicultural mosaic order and progress fight against imperialism the break from the Ottoman empire and Turkey as bridge between east-and-west.
