Migrant Bodies in the Land/City of 2000s Turkish Cinema
(Taylor and Francis, 2025) Bayrakdar, D.
In this essay, I explore the land-, sea-, and cityscapes in six films (five Turkish and one Turkish German)—Bliss, The Wound, Rıza, Broken Mus-sels, The Guest, and Seaburners—and their use of place and non-place. Hamid Naficy’s concept of transitional space and Marc Augé’s notion of non-place, based on Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, will be the basis of the theoretical discussion. I focus on what I see as a major shift in the representation of the migrant experience in the Turkish cinema of the early and late 2000s, a shift from the land- and cityscapes to films whose setting is the seascape. This shift, I argue, corresponds to changes in the phases of migration that flow within and through Turkey, and both government policies and the public perception. © 2022 The authors/Taylor & Francis Group.

Turkish Academics in Europe: an Autumn Tale
(Springer Science and Business Media B.V., 2007) Bayrakdar, D.
When I was invited to contribute a chapter to this book on the situation of Turkish higher education, I found myself humming “An Englishman in New York”: the writer of the song set out as a poor teacher himself, and probably had to go through much hardship before he ended up as a star in the ‘Big Apple’. Turkish academics, although belonging geographically to the European area, often find themselves viewed and feeling like aliens in the European academic world. In this chapter, I shall try to illustrate the contextual reality in which Turkish academics exist as their country moves along the road towards membership of the European Union. A brief historical overview will help us to schematise a general picture aided by a few facts and figures about Turkey. The chapter will go on to provide further details concerning the present situation and the ongoing debate between the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP), which is rooted in Islamic politics, and the Higher Education Council (YÖK). I will also discuss the new regulations concerning YÖK and higher education in Turkey. Later, I shall concentrate on the reflections of Turkish academics on higher education in Turkey and on YÖK, which, I believe, will cast some light on the title, “Turkish Academics in Europe: Nomads Chasing a European Dream”. © 2007, Springer.

İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi'nin Kamuoyu Önderlerine Yönelik Halkla İlişkiler Çalışmaları: Davetiyeler Aracılığıyla Ölçümleme
(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2009) Ugursoy, Ahu Samav; Bayraktar, Gülümser Deniz
Yerel secimler 29 Mart 2009 tarihinde yapilmistir. Bu tarihe kadar ÝBB.nin davetiyeleri arsivlenerek incelemeye dahil edilmistir. calismada ÝBB.nin davetiyeler araciligiyla 2007-2011 yili stratejik planinda belirledigi hedefler dogrultusunda Ýstanbul.da bulunan universiteler kamu kuruluslari ve sivil toplum kuruluslari gibi toplumsal erk sahiplerine ulasmak icin nasil bir soylem kullandigi arastirilmistir.

Refugees and Migrants in Contemporary Film, Art and Media
(Taylor and Francis, 2025) Bayrakdar, D.; Burgoyne, R.
Migration in the 21st century is one of the pre-eminent issues of our present historical moment, a phenomenon that has acquired new urgency with accelerating climate change, civil wars, and growing economic scarcities. Refugees and Migrants in Contemporary Film, Art and Media consists of eleven essays that explore how artists have imaginatively engaged with this monumental human drama, examining a range of alternative modes of representation that provide striking new takes on the experiences of these precarious populations. Covering prominent art works by Ai Weiwei and Richard Mosse, and extending the spectrum of representation to refugee film workshops on the island of Lésbos as well as virtual reality installations of Alejandro G. Iñárritu and works by Balkan and Turkish directors, such as Melisa Önel, the chapters included here focus on the power of aesthetic engagement to illuminate the stories of refugees and migrants in ways that overturn journalistic clichés. © 2022 The authors/Taylor & Francis Group.

Borders as Blackholes: Contemporary Migratory Films in Turkey
(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2016) Ayata, Azra; Bayrakdar, Gülümser Deniz
European Union integration process foresees harmonization of nation-state's migration and asylum systems. In this sense, border controls are strengthened and non-European countries are included in these border regimes. As a candidate country, Turkey's migration and asylum system shows changes. As a result of these policies, new transition spaces, structures and definitions are generated. In accordance with changing socio-political environments; cinema reflects these changes. In this thesis, primarily focusing on Kumun Tadı (Melisa Önel, 2013) and Rıza (Tayfun Pirselimoğlu, 2007), I will examine how these films question produced structures and definitions of migration. In this sense, they offer "critical sites" to those newly established spaces.

    Agnès Varda and Essay film
(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2021) Kaplama, Aslıhan Zeynep; Bayrakdar, G. Deniz
In this thesis study, I explore the essay film as a form, specifically in the cinema of Agnès Varda. By demonstrating how Varda practices essayistic filmmaking, I discuss some definitions and characteristics of the essay film. Since the essay film crosses the boundaries and manages to take place either outside the scope of documentary or fiction, I discuss the essay film as an autonomous form instead of integrating it within the field of documentary filmmaking. I examine Varda's essayistic filmmaking practices through the instrumentality of essay film theory, which takes its source from the literary tradition and flourishes through analyzing the cinematic essay that combines the verbal and the visual in its unique structure. I focus on the film Visages Villages (2017) in terms of how the essay film blurs fact and fiction, objectivity and subjectivity, and establishes a dialogical (Bakhtin, 1929) relationship between spectator and image. Before analysis of the film, I present an overview of the historical background of the essay film practices and essay film theory, and draw an analogy between the avant-garde roots of the essay film and the position of Varda in the 1950s avant-garde cinema and the French New Wave movement. The focus of my thesis also follows an essayist approach, shifting between theories, film history, and Agnès Varda's personal story. Since Varda's essayist filmmaking merges documentary and fiction, still and moving images, reality and illusion, past and present on the surface of photographs/murals and her own filmic journey, the analysis of Visages Villages allows me to examine - in addition to essay film theory - intertextuality, landscape in the cinema, and the pastness and presentness of photographic and moving images.
