Master Thesis Modularity Analysis of a Health Information Platform From a Network Science Perspective(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2015) Alaşan, Semiha Nur; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Management Information SystemsAs Barabási (2015) emphasizes that the very idea of communities goes back to the time people were born into communities and had to find their individuality. But today it is the other way around, that is, people are born individuals and have to find their communities. This research is aimed to better understand modularity measures for a health information platform. Such platform is an exemplary of its many kinds that are characterized as interactive, web-based information exchange platforms. These platforms draw attentions of academics due to its underlying complex systems behavior in various domains such as computer science, management science, sociology, and management information systems (MIS). We adopt a perspective of an emerging interdisciplinary field called network science that enables us to analyze modularity of a health information platform. The whole connection network normally has 2143 nodes and 5706 edges. In this research, since the modularity is examined, it is vague to integrate the sprinkled nodes over the giant component. Thus and so, the only giant component having 1652 nodes and 5146 edges is studied. This analysis is based on the modularity maximization algorithm, which Gephi uses as default, by assigning two different resolution values for the same data set to try which resolution value gives better results. Master Thesis Social Network Analysis of Innovation Mentor Community of Practice(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2022) ALTINIŞIK, Gunda Esra; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Management Information SystemsInnovation is directly related to the development of economies, and with the awareness of its criticality, various nation-wide support programs and innovation communities have emerged in recent years. These communities are established along their own specific structures and dynamics that can be examined by their level of connectedness and its underlying members’ attributes. In this research, a government-sponsored innovation mentors’ community of practice (CoP) has been examined. Thus, the members are advised to bring their knowledge to adopt the framework to specific cases and share their experiences with their peers. A CoP stands on the basic premise that the practice (knowhow) is shared among members and stimulates connectedness along their competencies. In this context, the first question is: how to measure the connectedness of the community and whether the CoP under investigation achieves the desired level of connectedness? The second is: what specific mentors’ attributes (competencies) characterize the preferred choices of connectedness? More particularly, how knowledge-sharing preferences are associated by the mentors’ attributes of this CoP? We employed Social Network Analysis techniques and Jaccard Similarity to answer them. The findings reveal that the CoP of innovation mentors is highly connected for a giant component, but low at the network level. Degree, title and institution as the members’ attributes may not play a significant role in the connectedness of this community. Even though mentors meet on a denominator in basic competencies in their cooperation, the findings show that they cooperate interdisciplinary. We argue that the dissimilar competencies of the connected mentors can be considered as a signature of the very idea of connectedness. Further research is needed to validate this claim with richer data, preferably with a temporal aspect.Master Thesis A Network Science Approach To Correlations Between Course Achievement and Community Structure in School Friendship Networks(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2017) Kafkas, Kenan; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Management Information Systemsin this research we examine a secondary school social network. We apply social network analysis (SNA) techniques on the close friendship structure of the students. Our aim is to answer the following questions regarding the network. The first question is what are the mixing values with respect to test achievement scores gender and class. The second question is how are the communities in the network structured. Such findings can be significant assets in understanding and improving the learning environment. They may be used to help teachers and school managers in deciding more workable and efficient student matchings. For this study we conducted a survey to a group of 10th grade students and gathered the necessary information to construct the social network around the school. Our findings show that the friendship in overall network is neither assortative nor disassortative with respect to academic success in other words the two attributes are not correlated. On the other hand gender and class mixing measures are significantly high which not surprisingly suggests that the students prefer to bond with their classmates and also with the same gender friends. Finally after examining the communities within each classroom we observe similar community structures. in the light of these findings we propose a method for composing the classrooms to construct an efficient and successful learning environment.Master Thesis Application of the Right To Data Portability: a Technical and Managerial Perspective(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2019) Erkmen, Alp; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Management Information SystemsEuropean Union’s General Data Protection Regulation provides individuals with new rights one of which is the Right to Data Portability. The Right to Data Portability has been further explained by relevant European data protection bodies’ guidelines (European Data Protection Board, Article 29 Working Party, Information Commissioner’s Office). Article 29 Working Party and Information Commissioner’s Office refer to midata initiative in the United Kingdom as an exemplary application of the Right to Data Portability. We investigate whether midata initiative is compliant with the Right to Data Portability and these guidelines as it was claimed by relevant European data protection bodies. In this thesis by using open, axial and selective coding to compare and explain the relationships between midata and these guidelines, we found that while midata is compliant with the Right to Data Portability and these guidelines in some respects, it is also not compliant regarding certain elements. We believe that our findings should provoke and shape revisions of these guidelines as many privacy professionals look at these guidelines to understand and interpret General Data Protection Regulation’s Right to Data Portability. This thesis also translates the Right to Data Portability’s provisional requirements to action plan steps in the context of data, technology and management. It provides good practice recommendations, scenarios and discussions for project managers and privacy professionals to support decision making and management practice in the application of the Right to Data Portability.Master Thesis Adoption of an Agile Approach To E-Commerce Software Development Projects(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2015) Bilen, Metin; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Management Information SystemsCompanies' business operation methods and processes have been vigorously affected by the reflection of electronic business to economy. Product-focused business model, which is executed by traditional companies, has been changed to customer-driven business model due to the speed and facility of communication among project members. The impact of end-users has been changed in a good way by the computers and mobile devices on e-commerce world. Customers have more power thanks to the increase of alternatives meeting the customer needs, pricing policy executed among competitors, competition to provide services, and ease of access to products. The power of customers has been increased by reason of being digital, and it conduced more demanding and hardly satisfied customer mass. Adopting information technologies to a business process, increasing productivity and speeding up the process has become the main purpose of e-commerce companies. The capability of parallel execution between processes implemented in software projects and e-commerce business process is a curiosity. This thesis raises the issue of how an agile software development method catches up the same tempo and the same success with the software projects business dynamics. In particular, this research aims to understand the practice of adapting an agile method to various e-commerce software development projects from a framework adopted in method engineering. The framework employs static and dynamic aspects of the fragments of a method along with artifacts and actors types. We conducted a case study in one of the leading e-commerce companies where many software development projects have been examined extensively. We found plenty of project characteristics with respect to business dynamics, project organizations, and product characteristics which have been essential to understand an extent to which the method fragments have been adapted. This research is an attempt to surface the context in which the method is adapted to the project or vice versa.Master Thesis Hub Analysis of Health Information Platform From a Network Science Perspective(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2015) Çalışan Özyurt, Şeyma; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Management Information SystemsOnline information platforms such as social networking applications are subject to examination of the underlying interactions as a network. Managers of these platforms are often unaware what constitutes the very idea of network growth. Conventional web and social analytics metrics are not adequate to surface the intriguing interplays among individuals interacting on these platforms. Thus, the challenge for managers is to know what underlies growth of the network on these platforms. The goal of this research is to identify growth mechanisms via hubs of an online health platform from a network science perspective. In particular, it is aimed to understand characteristics of the most connected nodes, so-called "Hubs", so that hub contributions to network growth can be discerned. From a network science perspective, the research is realized by examining the time dependent graph of hubs along with their attributes, which are the role and gender attributes. The only common pattern that is observed for hub behavior over time can be best described as typical step functions or "staircase" functions. Furthermore, one of the most prominent features of hub is observed in this online information health platform, appears to be dissassortativity. That is, hubs form edges with different role or gender nodes. Actually, almost all hubs form edges in the opposite gender. Also, they prefer to form edges with different role nodes in general. This research will guide for platform managers to decide alternating product attractiveness or customer loyalty opportunities.Master Thesis Modularity Analysis of a Bipartite Network for an E-Commerce Shop(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2016) Kariniauskaite, Dzordana; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Management Information SystemsMany real-world systems which are of interest to both researchers and practitioners can be modeled as networks – sets of nodes, representing objects, and links between them, representing the interactions among these objects. One of the most important categories of complex networks in naturally real-world systems is bipartite networks (opposite to general unipartite networks), where nodes can be divided into two disjoint sets such that no two nodes of the same type are connected; there are no links connecting nodes of the same type. The identification of communities in networks is crucial for understanding its underlying structure and behavior. In this study, the bipartite network of Internet shop web platform, where buyers and products represent nodes and purchases made represent links, is analyzed. The analysis is based on the modularity function by means of an open source network analysis and visualization tool Gephi. The twenty biggest modules, including hubs, of the giant component are analyzed in depth. The results of the analysis of category types of product hubs could be used for creating new type of product categories in the e-shop, where the product categories are formed according the most popular product types between communities, leaving behind the traditional marketing methods when the product groups are created considering the characteristics and similarities of the products or the most bought products in the e-shop.Master Thesis Using Gamification Approach for Scoring Application Developers of an Apaas(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2014) Gürol, Mustafa Volkan; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Management Information SystemsCloud Computing has experienced a predominant growth during the past years and businesses who have shifted to the cloud model acknowledge the benefits, however there is still a room for expansion globally, and the growth is expected to continue. IT has invented new ways of accelerating application (app) development during the past 100 years. Cloud is no exception. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is, emerging to raise the abstraction bar of operational aspects of like deployment, availability, scalability, security. Application Platform (aPaaS) is emerging to raise the abstraction bar of app development, aiming to make app development faster and easier for developers. APaaS are offering companies decreased development costs, and higher time to market while boosting productivity. Despite all the aforementioned advantages, to attract attention of app development enthusiasts in a global scale is a challenge. An app platform should be engaging, easy to understand, easy to use, as well as rewarding. Developers should enjoy working with it; the platform should exert the so-called coolness factor, so that a developer sticks to it until the app is leveraged by its customer. Our main focus on this thesis is, with the help of gamification techniques, to convert an aPaaS into an intuitive, engaging platform for developers. We chose ImonaCloud (imona.com) as the application platform. In the scope of this thesis, 30 developers scored and rewarded according to their actions and achievements on the platform. By looking their meta-data actions and scores they got, it can be said that, our scoring model is viable for that kind of aPaaS platforms. This model may help not only the developers but for the novice programmers to learn the platform faster and become more engaged.Master Thesis Technology-Enabled Innovation in Airline Distribution Channels(Kadir Has Üniversitesi, 2018) Doğan, Nagihan; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Aydın, Mehmet Nafiz; Management Information SystemsIn the past, airline distribution process, which was between airline companies and customers, was under the control of intermediaries such as GDSs. After the advancement of internet technology in airline distribution, online players emerged, and airline companies established their websites to bypass the intermediaries. Since new technologies have still been emerging to meet the key factors such as customer expectations, technological innovations and technical insufficiency of the intermediaries in distribution industry, the structure of airline distribution will continue to evolve in the next decade. In this study, we aimed to understand how the industry evolved according to the emerged players and developed technologies by utilizing secondary data such as relevant literature and industry reports. As a result, we constituted an integrated framework for analyzing the industry in timeline including three phases (past, present, future) and from four aspects (market forces, technology trends, ecosystem players, ecosystem canvas).
