Abstract
Today's design education is often criticized for falling behind current demands and becoming standardized due to various factors; critics argue it's disconnected from real-world needs, rapidly changing design scopes, and overly focused on materialized outcomes, leaving graduates unprepared for their careers. While early standardization in contemporary design education supported the development of the design profession, today it risks limiting critical thinking, creativity, diversity, and exploration. Some scholars call for reform to equip students across disciplines with technical and soft skills, enhance their self-development, and cultivate a new breed of designers (e.g., Norman, Yang et al.). Within this context, the study investigates Benetton's Fabrica (1994–2024) in Italy, founded by Oliviero Toscani, as a single-case study of an informal experiential learning platform, examining its key components, structure, methodology, social and professional learning encounters, and their role in the learning experience and alumni's careers. It functions as a professional practice rather than a school, retaining educational values such as research, experimentation through interdisciplinary and collaborative projects, workshops, seminars, with a 'learning by doing' methodology, supporting professional and personal growth. The study offers insights from a company's initiative that provides residents with a global and interdisciplinary community of young creatives, culture, time, space, creative freedom, and mentorship. The researcher's experience as a resident (2003–2005) provides background knowledge and access to Fabrica's community. The study is auto-ethnographic, supported by shared past experiences. Using a cross sectional research frame and a mixed-method approach, it draws on academic literature, online resources, an alumni questionnaire, and an interview with the CEO of Fabrica today. The study ultimately aims to provide insights for contemporary design education and design-focused brand initiatives.
