Abstract
This thesis aims to analyze the Culture and Art critiques written by Bilge Karasu between 1954 and 1959, published in Forum Magazine, a bi-weekly periodical that circulated from 1954 to 1970. The study examines these texts in relation to the artistic movements, art market dynamics, and art-related debates in Turkey, with a particular focus on how they intersected with the state's cultural policies In addition to situating Karasu's writings within this socio-political and artistic context, the thesis explores the interplay between visual representation and literary narration through the lens of Karasu's essays. Known as a key figure in Turkish postmodern literature, Karasu's deep engagement with various art forms, especially visual arts, music, and cinema, is analyzed to uncover how visuality, representation, and language interact across literature and the plastic arts. The research was conducted through an analysis of relevant literature, an archival study of Forum issues featuring Karasu's writings, and an investigation into the political history and cultural-artistic context of the period to examine Karasu's art criticism within the context in which it was produced. Alongside this archival research, the study also aimed to explore the notion of the image and artistic references in Karasu's literary works, tracing concepts that create parallels between artistic production and critical writing.
