The intertopian elements in Terry Gilliam's Brazil

Abstract

This thesis does a multi-layered reading of the film Brazil in terms of form and style. The analysis sees the utilization of dystopia and utopia in Brazil as notions and modes and not as genres. Terry Gilliam’s Brazil is often commonly treated as a dystopia. A new concept intertopia is used for describing Brazil to indicate its in-between position. The defining elements of intertopia are examined through the dystopian elements in the film as well as the utopian elements for such as the humorous tone the dream and daydreaming sequences the notion of hope in the film and the ending. -- Absract'tan.

Bu tez Brazil filminin biçim, stil, tarz ve ideoloji açısından çok katmanlı okumasını yapmaktadır. İncelemede sinema çalışmalarda distopya ve ütopya kavramlara yaklaşımının türsel değil modlara göre olması gerektiğini vurgular. Terry Gilliam'ın Brazil adlı filmi sıklıkla distopik olarak görülmüştür.. Bu tezde Brazil'i tanımlamak için intetopik kavramı kullanılmıştır. Intertopianın tanımlayıcı öğeleri filmde distopyacı elemanlarının yanı sıra için ütopik öğeleri aracılığıyla da incelenir. Filmin ütopik stili mizahi ton, rüya ve hayal sahneleri ve filmin kapanışı gibi öğelerden oluşmaktadır.
